Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts 2011 New Student Scholarship

I am the lucky recipient of the Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts 2011 New Student Scholarship. I took the Advanced Fabrication class with Alan Revere last weekend. I wanted to thank Alan and for the generous gift and making me feel so welcome!

I had great time and learned a great deal about making hinges and metalsmithing in general. My objective was to learn ways to put more movement in my bug brooches such as wings that flap and legs that wiggle. I had never made hinges before, so I made a classic 3 knuckle hinge. I also made a carved tab hinge out of rod--these hinges will make great bug legs.

Nice. I see the bug leg application.

It is where you carve into the ends of rod segments to create tabs to rivet together.

It depends on what I'm making. If it's a traditional bezel I use fine silver, unless it's going to take a beating, like in a ring. Then I usually go with Argentium or conventional sterling. I often heat harden my Argentium work in a kiln before setting the stones, so if I'm doing that I'll use fine silver or conventional sterling for a bezel so the silver will still be soft enough to close the bezel.

What's a carved tab hinge?

Thanks Wendy!  I was just thinking of you yesterday.  I remember that you use mostly argentium silver.  Do you use fine silver or argentium silver for your bezels?  Thanks

Excellent! Congratulations Jeanie. You are certainly deserving.

"Hi John. I love your flute. I worked at a job for 23 years making keys and the metal parts for contrabassoons. Unfortunately, there was no creativity involved. The upside is that I learned a huge amount about working with metal and making tools."
