"Diagnostics" - Automaton by Tom Haney - 2016

A commission by a man in the automobile parts supply business. His idea - centered around the fact that car have become increasingly more complicated over the years, and today's customers don't always understand that - was the starting point for this piece.

The piece measures 15" x 28" x 12", and is powered by two AC gearmotors - one to run the 'engine' and one to run the mechanism.

Hand-sculpted polymer clay heads, hand-carved basswood bodies, with handmade clothes.
The engine and various other pieces are constructed from found objects. The vehicle, completely scratch-built from basswood, incorporates RC car hubs and hand-formed plexiglas windows.
Handmade base with scratch-built mechanisms. The 4 cams and 4 levers, (incorporating precision bearings), control the movement of the 2 figures, and the 'on and off' of the engine.

Approximately 2 months start to finish.

Music by Belle & Sebastian - "I Love My Car"
