Deadline Extended: EMERGENCE: New Questions in Craft and Object Making

The Winthrop University Guild of Emerging Metalsmiths is excited to announce the call for entry for Emergence: New Questions in Craft and Object Making. Curated by Arthur Hash, Emergence is looking for three-dimensional works created by students that are exploring new frontiers in craft through material, concept, and technique.

As the artistic approach continues to evolve in light of new technologies, materials, and processes, artists are faced with seemingly endless possibilities. Emergence will feature works that are experimental and thought provoking in nature, evoking notions of mystery and/or discovery or exist outside the realm of conventional studio practices.  This exhibition of student work is open to all 3-dimensional mediums, including but not limited to: ceramics, fiber, glass, metal, jewelry, paper, wood, assemblage, robotics, CAD/CAM, or any combination of craft and digital media.

The exhibition will be on display in the Lewandowski Student Gallery at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. from March 3-23, 2015. All applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program. Please contact [e-mail] with questions.

About the Juror:

Arthur Hash received his M.F.A. in metalsmithing and jewelry design from Indiana University in 2005 and his B.F.A. in crafts/material studies from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2002. Currently, Arthur is an assistant professor and the area coordinator in metalsmithing and jewelry design at Appalachian State University.  In 2014 Arthur will have his fifth solo exhibition titled “Arthur Hash, Wearable Objects”, at the Ridderhof Martin Gallery at the University of Mary Washington. In 2013, Arthur co-founded the Makerbot innovation lab for Fine and Performing Arts at the State University of New York at New Paltz.  In 2007, Arthur was awarded his second Fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Va and named a Searchlight Artist by the American Craft Council. Other recent exhibitions include: “Out of the Box –Trends in Contemporary Jewelry” at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Virginia Beach, Va and “Body Language: Contemporary Art Jewelry” at the Wayne Art Center in Philadelphia, Penn.  Arthur’s work is included in a number of private and public collections around the United States.

Arthur’s work comes from a commitment to participate in the contemporary exploration of what jewelry is and can be, while retaining the sense of elegance and beauty found in the long tradition of body adornment. His recent work incorporates digital fabrication technologies such as waterjet cutting, 3D scanning, CNC routing and rapid prototyping and laser engraving to make one-off art jewelry pieces.
