"Defenestration" was an original, local landmark in San Francisco, CA between 1997 and 2013. The artist behind the work is Brian Goggin.

The house/sculpture/public artwork was created to attract locals and visitors alike and only intended to be exhibited for one year. However, as things often go, the public installation became so popular that it turned into a more permanent installation remaining open for about 16 years, mainly because the area remained underdeveloped (a remarkable euphemism if there ever was one) for all those years.

The vacant Hugo Hotel at the intersections of 6th Street and Howard and constructed in 1908, formed the foundation of the installation. Run down and in desperate need of major restoration it would have taken a lot of money to bring the place back up, not even to speak of the whole neighborhood. Fun while it lasted, the outdoor installation was up for 16 years during which many people visited. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end and the hotel has since been slated for demolition to make room for affordable housing.

From the artist's website:

"This multi-disciplinary sculptural mural involves seemingly animated furniture; tables, chairs, lamps, grandfather clocks, a refrigerator, and couches, their bodies bent like centipedes, fastened to the walls and window-sills, their insect-like legs seeming to grasp the surfaces. Against society’s expectations, these everyday objects flood out of windows like escapees, out onto available ledges, up and down the walls, onto the fire escapes and off the roof. “DEFENESTRATION” was created by Brian Goggin with the help of over 100 volunteers."
