Exciting New Workshops at SCC in Pittsburgh

Lynn Batchelder: Steel Jewelry Fabrication
This course will cover the basics of working and soldering with mild steel wire and sheet metal on a jewelry scale. We will manipulate and transform this inexpensive and highly common industrial material through the application of traditional metals techniques to create components for a necklace. The class will discover and discuss how the properties of steel differ from non-ferrous metals. Lastly we will explore finishing techniques for coloring and maintaining the metal for wearability.

Tuition for this workshop is $200.  A materials fee of $30 is due on the day of the workshop, payable to the instructor for consumables.

Gabriel Craig and Amy Weiks: Drawing on Metal: Surface Embellishment Techniques for Jewelry and Small Objects
In this two-day workshop students will learn the basics of surface embellishment techniques that allow for tightly controlled linear and gestural effects. The workshop will cover chasing, stamping, scribing, hammer engraving, and solder inlay. These lesser known techniques will be shown in combination with more well known processes such as roll printing, planishing, and reticulation in order to create depth in work pieces. Students will have time to make several samples, in addition to learning how to create some of the specialty tools used and discussing the integration of the feature techniques into finished jewelry and small objects.

Tuition for this workshop is $200. A materials fee of $30 is due on the day of the workshop, payable to the instructor for consumables.
