Don't miss this: The Smith Shop is coming to Pittsburgh Labor Day Weekend

Gabriel Craig and Amy Weiks are coming to the Society for Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh during the first weekend of September. They'll give an artist lecture and are teaching a workshop. This will be an opportunity to see some of the parallels between the Detroit and Pittsburgh maker scenes, as well as highlighting professionalism in the metals field.
If cost is an issue, the SCC has some scholarships are available. Please email Rachel Saul and inquire: thestudio@contemporarycraft.org.

About the event:

Gabriel Craig is a highly skilled metalsmith, writer and craft activist.  His work has been exhibited nationally at Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., The National Ornamental Metal Museum in Memphis, TN, and the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland, OR.

Amy Weiks, a talented metalsmith, has an extensive educational background.  She received an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2012 and a BFA from Western Michigan University.  She also attended Glasgow School of Art in Scotland where she studied printmaking, and received a post baccalaureate degree in Jewelry and Metalworking.

The Smith Shop, founded in 2012, is a nationally recognized, dynamic and craft-centric metal fabrication studio.  This Detroit based operation, specializes in the use of gold, silver, copper, brass and steel.  Dwell Magazine described the shop as being on the “forefront of Detroit’s artisans renaissance.”  Their media attention has stretched from The New York Times to Martha Stewart Living. This well-deserved notoriety stems from the shop’s various limited-production wholesale jewelry, architectural hardware, and furniture.  The Shop also provides educational experiences through workshops, classes, and private lessons.

We hope you’ll join us for Gabriel and Amy’s upcoming workshop, “Drawing on Metal: Surface Embellishment Techniques for Jewelry and Small Objects,” happening on September 5 & 6.  In this two-day workshop students will learn the basics of surface embellishment techniques that allow for tightly controlled linear and gestural effects. The workshop will cover chasing, stamping, scribing, hammer engraving, and solder inlay.
