Israeli team combines traditional smocking with computer technology

Crafted Technology is a research design project integrating the work of Tamara Efrat of the Bezalel Industrial Design Department, and Moran Mizrahi and Dr. Amit Zoran of the School of Computer Science of the Hebrew University.

The project looks at cooperation possibilities between traditional craftsmen and technology experts. It focuses on the contemporary interpretation of traditional smocking embroidery through parameter-using tools.

In the 18th century and early 19th century, the smock-frock was worn by English villagers as work clothes and represented a type of authentic folk craft. After the industrial revolution, which led to the mass production of elastic and comfortable garments, the simple, practical element of this embroidery technique was turned into a status symbol, a luxury for those who could afford to appreciate and buy craftwork and authentic popular culture.

Crafted Technology analyzed the construction and textural characteristics of smocking and converted it into an algorithm a machine can use and replicate.
