UCA hosts conference for new wave of UK craft-makers

University for the Creative Arts (UCA) Farnham played host to Rising Stars 2014 symposium earlier this month, providing emerging craft-makers with expert tips from industry professionals and a chance to meet with other creatives.

The symposium attracted over 50 craft-makers from all over the country, including both students and professionals. Most attendees were at an early stage of their careers in craft-making or considering setting up businesses and the day was filled with practical advice from the Crafts Council, a-n The Artists Information Company, Surrey Arts, Making Space and suthor Alison Branagan. Topics included setting up your own studio, business advice and what opportunities there are for makers to sharpen their skills. Industry experts also reported on key trends in Crafts and the history of the industry.

The day’s keynote was given by Dr Maureen Bampton, Director of Bluecoat Display Centre in Liverpool, who gave an overview of Contemporary Crafts over the past 30 years.  Maureen has over 25 years’ experience working in the Contemporary Crafts industry, before which she had an interest in decorative arts and worked in antiques. She chose to pursue Contemporary Crafts due to its personal nature; she could meet with the makers and hear more about their inspiration and the story behind their pieces.

“It’s been brilliant to be part of Rising Stars 2014 – I’ve got a real interest in emerging makers so it’s really nice to meet more at the Symposium,” said Dr Maureen Bampton. “I love the freshness of new work, especially graduate work. This Symposium is a great opportunity for emerging makers to meet with each other and share experiences, but also hear what’s in store for them in the industry and some key advice that industry professionals have learnt over the years. The New Ashgate Gallery and UCA are very well connected, too, so there’s lots of information for the makers to take away with them that will benefit their careers in the long term.”
The Rising Stars 2014 programme has been established by the New Ashgate Gallery and UCA Farnham to showcase and support new emerging makers. The programme also includes a touring exhibition and AIRTIME, a networking event organized by a-n The Artists Information Company.

Elizabeth Ashdown, a woven textile designer from London attended the Symposium.

“My work is currently in an exhibition at the New Ashgate Gallery, so it was there that I heard about the Symposium,” said Elizabeth. “I was keen to attend as the talks and different speakers seemed very interesting. I was pleased that there was a tax and business skills talk, as this is an area I wanted more understanding of! The day was very good; there were a lot of different topics covered in a manageable and easy to understand manner.”

"The Rising Stars Symposium brought together outstanding entrepreneurs and outstanding speakers at Farnham,” said Bob Pulley, Head of the School of Crafts & Design at UCA. “UCA is committed to helping able makers and designers to turn invention into innovation through sustainable enterprise. Our aim is to integrate the creative talent of the Rising Stars and the business nous of experienced marketing and business advisors to help transform cultural capital into valuable ideas. We are delighted to have hosted such an important Symposium, dedicated to transforming the dreams of very able makers and designers into reality."

I do hope that you won't mind me forwarding you the information below regarding a bronze casting course that we are running at our base in Porthyrhyd, Carmarthenshire.

New British Art is a not-for-profit artists' organisation that makes and exhibits artworks and other collaborative projects. We recently received Arts Council of Wales funding towards a project 'the Exchange' where a recent graduate was mentored by a more experienced artist during a residency at our base in a former dairy farm. Part of this project also included a bronze casting course, open to the public, and subsidised by the grant. We were very encouraged by the response and as a consequence are developing a programme of courses to run here.

We are trying to expand the range of contacts we have and so I have found your details through the 'trusty' Google, and thought that you might be interested in this because of your own work. But please let me know if you'd rather I didn't contact you.

Kind regards, Caroline Taylor
