Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

A L'Etage 2
New designer maker website with high quality Jewellery, Art, Textiles and more to come..

When I was 14 years old my Sister and I set up a little shop in my bedroom where we could make jewellery that we would then sell in school. We called it A L'Etage 2, since my room was the second room along at the top of the stairs. This soon became a thriving small business that would later inspire me to set up my real jewellery business in 1996.

Now many years later we are setting up the shop again, but this time on-line so it feels right to call it A L'Etage 2 especially since we share a workshop.

In the meantime we have met many talented and skilled artists and crafts people and some of them will also be showing their work with us. It is our aim with A L'Etage 2 to only sell high quality handmade pieces by individual designer makers.

We hope you will enjoy visiting us at www.aletage2.com

September's Featured Maker

Each month we feature the work of a different artist/maker on our website. Take a look and find out about their inspiration, how they create the work and generally what makes them and their work unique.
Michael Hart Blacksmith

Michael in his forge
Michael Hart is a young, award-winning blacksmith who specialises in high quality hand-forged ironwork of bespoke design from gates, railings and staircases to candle-holders and garden ornaments.

Michael stepped into a forge for the first time at the age of 18 and was hooked but had quite a journey before he was able to establish his own workshop in West Kent with all the tools and machinery he required to set up his business.

Bespoke ironwork on staircase

He takes his inspiration from the medium he works with and also likes art nouveau style. Overall however he ensures his designs fit their surroundings and, on large scale pieces that become part of a building, he will take into account the building's history, its location, its architecture and the space.

Joanna Gollberg: Collected
An Exploration of Travel Through Jewelry
VELVET DA VINCI
September 3 – 28, 2014
Artist’s Reception: Friday, September 5, 6-8pm
San Francisco’s Velvet da Vinci is proud to present Joanna Gollberg:
Collected, An Exploration of Travel Through Jewelry. The show will run from
September 3 – 28, 2014. An opening reception with the artist will take place on
Friday, September 5, 6-8pm.
Velvet Da Vinci 2015 Polk Street, San Francisco, CA 94109 415.441.0109 www.velvetdavinci.com
Joanna Gollberg’s most recent body of work considers the experiences of travel,
observation, and enlightenment through the form of jewelry. Inspired by her own
personal collection of coral, shells, and other keepsakes gathered while traveling
the world, the exhibition will feature an exciting new series created from precious
and semi precious materials, as well as found objects. Found in Mexico,
Western North Carolina, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam, these tokens
serve as a physical reminder of the place from which they came, their histories,
and the artist’s connection to each experience. The exhibition will also include a
selection of documentary photographs, taken by the artist on each trip.
On this pivotal new body of work, Gollberg writes:
! “I had never before given myself permission to use (these elements) in my
jewelry, because they were physical objects that kept me connected
to places that made my whole heart feel crushingly full... I chose to use
techniques that I rarely employ in my day to day jewelry making life—mold
making, wax carving, casting, enameling which gave me deep pleasure. I
freely used gemstones and materials that suited each piece, disregarding
any pre-planned price structure... The results are twofold: I am spiritually
refreshed and ready to re-enter my work life anew, and I have created a
body of work that is personally meaningful, yet still beautiful and true to my
aesthetic.”
With a Jewelry Design degree from FIT in New York City, Gollberg has been
creating and exhibiting unique wearable objects since 1997. A well-known and
respected author, she has written four books on handcrafted jewelry: Making
Metal Jewelry, Creative Metal Crafts, The Art & Craft of Making Jewelry, and The
Ultimate Jeweler's Guide. Her work has been included in gallery and museum
exhibitions across the US and has been featured in international publications
such as Art Jewelry Magazine, Lapidary Journal, Ornament Magazine, 1000
Rings, 500 Wedding Rings, 500 Enameled Objects, and 21st Century Jewelry.
Currently based out of Asheville, North Carolina, the artist also teaches at noted
craft institutions such as the Penland School of Crafts and Arrowmont School of
Arts & Crafts.
Since 1991, Velvet da Vinci has been a leader in showcasing new developments
in contemporary art jewelry and craft-based sculpture. Representing artists from
the US, Europe, Latin America and Japan, the quality and range of work shown
at Velvet da Vinci gallery has made it a regular must-see stop for collectors,
museum curators, and other knowledgeable art and art-jewelry enthusiasts. We
invite you to visit the gallery at 2015 Polk Street in San Francisco, or online at

Conservation of Architectural Ironwork CPD Course
A two day conservation course
DATE: 6 OCTOBER 2014 - 7 OCTOBER 2014
For further details about NHIG CPD courses please click here. To book a place on this course please download our booking form and, once completed, return it to us with full payment.

Aimed at professionals and craftspeople, this National Heritage Ironwork Group Continued Professional Development course is an introduction to the conservation of ironwork. Delegates will learn the basic principles of assessing historic ironwork in situ and make decisions about its care.

Tender procedures often require the commissioner of the work to have knowledge of the medium in order to procure the best value. We are offering you this knowledge with lecturers designed to equip those wishing to commission work on listed ironwork, whether architects, surveyors or conservation professionals with information they will find essential in the writing of specifications.

The course includes:

An introduction to heritage ironwork and historical context
Metallurgy of wrought iron and steels
Traditional tools, techniques, materials, design, and manufacture, with a focus on fixings
Discussion on working with iron and steel, the process of restoration, surface preparation and treatments
Specification and standards for heritage ironwork
Contracts and procurement.
The day will include a pricing exercise, and the lectures will be complimented by a site visit to survey historic ironwork and develop a strategy for its conservation.

Lecturers: Geoff Wallis & Chris Topp

Both lecturers are crafts people and acknowledged experts in the field of historic ironwork conservation. They will share their own practical experience and will be available to discuss delegates own projects.
