SNAG NEWS

CALL FOR ENTRY: “Shifting Sites”

Contemporary metalsmithing is a dynamic field, marked by ever-expanding possibilities for the creation and presentation of work. “Shifting Sites,” SNAG’s 2016 Juried Exhibition in Print produced by Metalsmith, will showcase works that explore the changing spaces of jewelry and objects as they are conceived, made, and displayed. Jurors Eva Eisler, Lauren Fensterstock, and Lori Talcott are seeking examples that creatively engage with their environment.

For this “Shifting Sites” issue, the emphasis is on location or place as either subject or actual space for the creation and display of work. The jurors welcome works that expand and explore the “where” of contemporary metalsmithing. As a subject for metalsmithing, “site” can be understood as geography, landscape or cityscape and be revealed in imagery or forms that reference natural settings, architecture, urban or rural spaces. Actual space of a piece can refer to where the idea was realized, the physical location of construction, where it is worn, or where it is displayed or sold.

“Shifting Sites” broadly refers to the changing boundaries in metalsmithing practice.

Here are three awesome SNAG ladies, each with very different aspirations, but all in need of financial assistance.…Continue

"Forging Entrepreneurs" Presenter Spotlight

Chris Hentz
The Possibilities of Digital Fabrication in a Small Metals Studio: Flat Pattern Development vs. 3D Printing
Hentz presents a variety of ways to use the Rhino CAD program as illustrated through his studio practice. He will talk about his methods for converting a 2D hand drawn sketch into a Rhino CAD drawing illustrating a 3D form. That 3D CAD drawing can be used to create a 2D flat pattern for traditional metal fabrication. Or that same drawing can be used with a variety of 3D printing processes.
SNAG's 2014 business symposium, "Forging Entrepreneurs: The Inside Track," is for artists running independent studios looking for skills and information on how to better run their business.

November 9th at the High Museum's Walter C. Hill Auditorium in Atlanta, Georgia from 8:30-5:30, with an after party 6:30-8:30 at Signature Gallery.   More details

 "Show us your hammer!"

We are continuing the "I am SNAG" campaign this fall, but with a twist...This year's "I am SNAG" campaign will take it's inspiration from the hammers that most every SNAG member uses, although in a variety of ways. From a tiny riveting hammer to a 10 lb sledgehammer, we are interested in reflecting the diversity of our members, the work they make and the tools they use.  Emphasize what makes you YOU in the photo - shoot in your studio at your bench, at the anvil, pose with your hammer, etc... Have fun with it! If you want to do it with a friend who's a SNAG member, feel free!
Please send images of you and your hammer to use for our upcoming fall video campaign.
The videos we are making will invigorate our membership, attract new members, as well as, help us to raise funds to bring you the programming you love.
You are SNAG.  Show us your hammer!

Making Jewelry Magic with the Orion Pulse Arc Welders

September 6 - 7, 2014

The Southern Highland Craft Guild and Folk Art Center are hosting the second National Orion Pulse Arc Welder Workshop in conjunction with SNAG. Attendees will learn what different welder models can do without the high cost of purchasing or maintaining a laser.

Learn to repair porosity, re-tip prongs, weld dissimilar metals together, weld bezels together, resize rings, construct jewelry without soldering, and even weld titanium. Brett White from Orion Jewelry Welders, as well as David Alberts, and Ruthie Cohen of the Mountain Metalsmiths School of Jewelry & Lapidary will be working with each individual on an actual pulse arc welder. Jewelers are encouraged to bring projects that they are working on to the workshop!SNAG

Workshop fees are being donated to SNAG and the Southern Highland Craft Guild for their educational programs. A $50 deposit is all that is necessary to hold your space.

For more information please contact Ruthie Cohen by phone: 828-687-7830 or at ruthie@mmsjl.com
