The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

This Month's Featured Maker

CIF logoEach month we feature the work of a different artist/maker on our website. Take a look and find out about their inspiration, how they create the work and generally what makes them and their work unique.
Kate Gorman - Jeweller

Kate exhibiting at Desire 2014
Jeweller, Kate Gorman, creates bold, innovative and unique mixed media jewellery.

Kate was born and brought up in the City of Durham and initially trained as an engineer but in her mid-thirties she returned to university to study Contemporary Textile Practice at Cleveland College of Art and Design and soon discovered that she loved to work in jewellery making large, mixed media, statement pieces

Kate says "I design and make innovative, bold jewellery for people who want to stand out from the crowd. This ranges from smaller pieces that can be worn every day, to large statement jewellery pieces that are a perfect fit for black tie or formal events. My favourite customer comments about my work are that it is "happy" jewellery and that how whenever they put it on it gives them a lift."

Kate takes her inspiration from a wide range of sources from the natural world to high fashion and contemporary art to heavy industry. Arching over all her work is an interest in tribal and folk jewellery and decoration. This breadth of inspiration ensures customers will always be buying a design which is out of the ordinary.

Kate's first major show was with Craft In Focus at Desire in Chelsea last year and she has now developed a reputation for colourful, structural work and has undertaken commissions for the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts in Gateshead and for Durham Art Gallery.

There is a new Government Scheme introduced to support students currently completing their undergraduate degree having paid the new £9k undergraduate fee. Next year’s graduates will be able to apply for the new postgraduate loan scheme – this scheme is seen as a way to bridge that gap. As Scottish universities do not charge the £9k fee, their graduates are not part of this scheme.
