TRADE EVENT:
TRAINING THE TRAINERS

Identifying the Future Training Needs of Hand Engravers

Craft Central
Tuesday 3rd March, 3.30-5.30pm

The art of hand engraving is at a pivotal point in its history. Practitioners of this skill are busier than ever.

However with over 40% reaching retirement age, there is a need to find practical ways to pass on these skills, maintain diversity and enable the next generation of hand engravers to provide a much sought after technique.
This second event follows a very successful turnout in Birmingham earlier this year. For this event, we need engravers and other professional from the industry based in and around London and the South East to put forward their views. This event will help the association plan the future training needs of our industry and give practitioners and industry professionals a chance to get together and exchange ideas.

Refreshments will be available and participants will have entry to the VIP the private view at 6pm

JE SUIS #HASHTAG
Kevin Murray

What’s the best way of disseminating a political slogan today? Where once the badge was a common medium for rallying calls, it now seems to have been eclipsed by the hashtag. The political messages of the day are less often worn on the body and more frequently disseminated through social media with the use of Twitter or Instagram hashtags or Facebook likes. The hashtag has the advantage of being simple, quick, and enabling instant association with others using the same designation.

So, for instance, the hashtag #jesuischarlie came out almost instantly after the massacre of the Charlie Hebdo staff. The journalist Joachim Roncin tweeted an image of the phrase one hour after the event. Though he had only 400 followers, #jesuischarlie was soon retweeted seven million times. At the vigils that followed immediately after, there was not enough time to produce badges. Instead, people displayed this phrase as stickers on their clothing or A4 sheets they’d printed out at home.

Four days later, George Clooney wore a badge to the Golden Globe awards. At the same event, Helen Mirren made a brooch out of a pencil, which had become the symbol of defiance in the face of terrorism. Then there was a flood of merchandising, including clutch bags and T-shirts. Google initially posted an image of a black ribbon to mark the occasion, but this was then replaced with an image of “Je suis Charlie.” The opportunity to create something like the AIDS ribbon was lost. Instead, there have been 50 attempts to patent the phrase.

The main sphere of action on the street was word play. Alternative permutations included “Je suis Nigeria” and “Je ne suis pas Charlie” from those protesting the magazine’s racism. The French comic Dieudonné was detained for saying “Je me sens Charlie Coulibaly,” [I feel I am Charlie Coulibaly] adding the name of the terrorist. In Melbourne, a member of Grandmothers for Refugees made a badge that said “Je suis asylum seeker.”

While #jesuischarlie was quickly exhausted, the hashtag response to the Australian incident that happened on December 15–16, 2014, proved more enduring. Several days after the siege, the plaza outside was flooded with floral tributes. While there were no mass vigils on the scale of Paris, popular concerns quickly shifted from anger at the terrorist to anxiety about the potential anti-Islam reaction that might be triggered. A young woman called Rachael Jacobs posted a story on Facebook about being on a train with a woman who had taken off her scarf and trying unsuccessfully to offer her support:

“I ran after her at the train station. I said ‘put it back on. I’ll walk with u.’ She started to cry and hugged me for about a minute - then walked off alone.”

@sirtessa picked this up and posted this tweet the next day: “If you [regularly] take the #373 bus b/w Coogee/MartinPl, wear religious attire & don’t feel safe alone: I’ll ride with you.” The follow-up tweet offered the hashtag #illridewithyou. Within a couple of days it featured in 120,000 tweets.

While this is a reassuring demonstration of support, it could go further. There’s almost no chance that the kind of women who might want or need that support would be able to locate a companion via Twitter on a specific train or bus at the correct time (one community representative also criticized it for presuming weakness among Muslims).

...

The badge is dead. Long live the #badge.

Arts Fest, RHS Garden Wisley

18 - 19 July 2015

Craft in Focus has again been invited to work with RHS Garden Wisley this summer with Arts Fest. Now in its second year the event will again focus on bringing a 'live' fair to the Garden. The RHS will be providing a wide range of music, theatre, storytelling etc while, for our part, we will coordinate a mix of demonstrating exhibitors and workshops to sit alongside this exciting event.

Click to see images from last year's event on our Facebook page.

The event will be promoted by the RHS advertisingcampaign, backed up with additional marketing by ourselves. As is usual for events at the Garden, it would be expected to attract in the region of 10,000 visitors, with approximately 15 to 20 craft based exhibitors expected.

We are seeking up to 20 exhibitors from all areas of craft/art that, as well as displaying their work for sale, can offer an interesting and informative demonstration and, in particular, those who are able to run small workshops for the visitors.

About SCHMUCK http://klimt02.net/nw/352/index.php
The SCHMUCK is an international exhibition that has been taking place in Munich for more than 50 years. It combines works of established artists and promising newcomers in the area of contemporary jewellery design and is the meeting place for collectors, jewellery lovers and museum curators from Germany and abroad.

Organized as a worldwide contest, the works are chosen by an internationally renowned curator each year, this time by Eva Eisler, professor at the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design (AAAD). “Presenting works at the SCHMUCK is an honor for any jewellery designer“, says Dieter Dohr, Management Board Chairman of the GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH. That is also why this time, more than 600 gold smiths and jewellery designers from Germany and abroad applied for the special show. In spring 2015, contributions by 63 artists from 21 countries will finally be on display.

This time, Karel Novak from the Czech Republic will be honored as the classic of modern art. Highlight of the SCHMUCK will be the awarding of the Herbert-Hofmann-prizes on Saturday, 14 March 2015 at 5 pm on stage in hall B1. On this day, a jury will select the three best works of the SCHMUCK. Each year, a number of accompanying events group around the special show at the Internationale Handwerksmesse in Munich galleries, museums and cultural institutes.

http://www.gep.ntpc.gov.tw/National_Metal_Crafts/2015Gold_htm/en_in...
Gold Museum of New Taipei City Government has laid down the basic foundation of raising the standard of metal crafts in Taiwan with our experience of holding National Metal Crafts Competitions in the last eight years. In 2015, we carry on the spirit of promoting the metal crafts of Taiwan and combine it with the theme of celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Gold Museum. We are now calling for entry worldwide, and looking forward to seeing entrant to break new ground in metal crafting.

Furthermore, in response to New Taipei City's status promotion as well as to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Museum, we have upgraded the scale of competition in 2015 to a higher standard and renamed the competition to “2015 Taiwan International Metal Craft Competition,” providing a wider platform to the art of metal crafts from all around the world and expecting to bring Taiwan's metal crafts more in line with international level. The competition invites metal craft professionals worldwide to participate in the jury, hoping to facilitate the interaction between Taiwanese and international metal craft artists and to stimulate art creations with a sense of contemporaneity and distinctive Taiwanese cultural features.

The competition has two categories: Jewelry and Objects. All entries must be originally created by the entrant(All entries must be created by personal), and metallic material should be the core of the entries. The competition results will be published in an electronic book, while the prize winning artworks will be exhibited in the Exhibition of “2015 Taiwan International Metal Craft Competition.”
