John Love Celebrates 40 Year's Service

Image: John Love (left) with Deputy Warden, Dr Robert Organ (right) after hallmarking the Olympic metals

John Love, our Superintendent Assayer, joined in 1975 as a young apprentice, learning all the skills of production; from sampling, to press-marking and hand-marking.

During his Apprenticeship he was involved in the vast quantity of work submitted to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977. During this year, the assay office received 60,000 articles on a daily basis, which brought new challenges and pressures to the production floor. John recalls this was a great learning experience for him, and the additional skills he gained set him up for the beginning of his career.

After his Apprenticeship, John worked as hand-marker in the Foreign Department in our Elliot House site. He later assisted the move back to Goldsmiths' Hall and became Assistant Manager of this department (later re-named the Gold Department). After progressing further to Manager of the Silver Department, he was promoted 8 years ago to Superintendent Assayer, second in command to the Deputy Warden.

Completing 40 years is rare in this modern environment, but John's commitment during this time has been exemplary. It is a tremendous achievement of dedication to the Company and hallmarking in general.

Well done, John!

In the Spotlight: Meet the Team

To celebrate John's 40th anniversary at our assay office, we decided to interview him for this month's meet the team feature.

Describe a typical day as Superintendant Assayer

At the assay office we provide a service of quality and integrity, which is something I feel very passionate about. My main responsibility is to maintain this service throughout each working day, which gives me the daily drive to do the best job I can.

What has been your most memorable moment? (you can mention more than one!)

Two things really. Firstly, the day I became the Superintendent Assayer, which is an historical position within the Company that dates back to 1478. As far as I know, no one previously has ever reached this position starting at bench level. Secondly, my son Daniel becoming an apprentice engineer here, following on the Love tradition within the Company.

To date, what has been your biggest achievement?

Becoming a Liveryman of this Company. Dad would have been proud if he were still around to know that from humble beginnings as a London Docker's son, I am where I am today.

This Biodegradable Jewelry Is Made Out Of Milk
DESIGN
June 2nd, 2015 / 11:04 AM

Written By
Daniela Walker
A diamond is forever, they say, but Paula Ortega’s latest collection of jewelry might not last another twenty years, and that is just what the artist intended. Her second collection, which she calls wearable sculptures rather than jewelry, is made out of milk proteins and metal. They are mostly biodegradable and not meant to last a lifetime – but that is what makes them more precious.. . .

UPCOMING EXHIBITION
'Not too precious'
11 July - 20 Sept 2015Ruthin Craft Centre, Wales

Really looking forward to this exhibition:

'Not Too Precious explores inspirational work by 25 international jewellers using materials for their expressive potential rather than fortheir intrinsic value. Radical artist jewellers of the late 1960s and 70s vigorously rejected the idea that jewellery should be considered ‘precious’ simply because of the materials of which it was made. Today, the use of a huge variety of materials in jewellery is far more accepted, but economic pressures are putting that freedom of artistic expression at potential risk as people revert to traditionally ‘valuable’ materials for ‘safety’. Not Too Precious challenges preconceptions about ‘non precious’ materials by encouraging us to consider ‘accrued value’: what talented makers bring to their work through their ideas and skill.'http://ruthincraftcentre.org.uk/?utm_source=Lina+Peterson+Newslette...
