A photograph is shaped more by the person behind the camera than by what's in front of it.

I find this video interesting with regard to how we artists chose to photograph our work and present certain facets of it to the public. What do we emphasize, what do we hide? If we shoot on white, black or grey, what are we saying? Work from others that we only know from images may wow us, but once we see it in person it is either a reinforcement of what we thought or a disappointment. The work turns out to be less colorful or more so, excellent or shoddy, larger or smaller - but almost never as we thought it would be.

If a model is introduced into the photo shoot, a completely new layer of meaning is added that influences the perception of the work in any number of ways, and as you saw in the video, our understanding of the image is formed by our individual interests and biases and by the background story we were made to believe in.

Do we craft artists use photography to our advantage or disadvantage? What can we learn from professional photographers who work with models? I wished there was more discussion and instruction about photography in our field. The visceral reaction people have when looking at models wearing our work necessitates us taking more control over the images we create.

At what point is photography deceptive and unethical and who gets to decide that that point has been reached?

Feel free to comment and post images of models with artwork you find compelling.

Confirmation bias is a very easy trap to fall into. We see and affirm what we expect to see.

Very interesting perhaps revealing our prejudices and expectations.  We make decisions about a persons character based on their professional roles or if they live on the street. Not all of it is true.

That was really lovely. I almost didn't watch it, thinking "6 Photographers 6 Portraits" not being that interesting to ME...and the key here now that I have watched it, is the ME I was focussing on. I was already judging how I would respond to this short video! Loved this. Thanks for sharing. Making me think.....
