Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

In the lead-up to Stockholm Furniture Fair, taking place this week, Icon visited an old working-class area on the city's Södermalm island, where artists and designers have transformed the industrial buildings into one of the world’s hippest hangouts

Dubbed SoFo by local creatives, or “South of Folkungagatan” to be more precise, one Stockholm neighbourhood on the island Södermalm has quickly grown into a young urban creative hotspot – recently Vogue named it the third most hip area in the world, while the BBC referred to it as the “new Brooklyn”, to many locals’ dismay.

Walking the streets of SoFo brings back memories of the past. The converted industrial buildings and artists’ studios are reminders of the area’s rich working-class heritage – Södermalm was once poor and densely populated. It was also a breeding ground for authors, poets and musicians alike, who all contributed to ensuring an
open-minded and artistic environment.

The cobbled streets, wooden houses and nearby water are among the most celebrated traits of the area. Today, the old corner shops around Nytorget square – which used to house local craftsmen, including brewers, butchers, tanners and silversmiths – have mostly been replaced by studios for designers and architects. These boast high ceilings and large street-facing windows, and are nestled among shops selling local wares, galleries, cafes where young freelancers hang out, restaurants and bars.

Each month we feature the work of a different artist/maker on our website. Take a look and find out about their inspiration, how they create the work and generally what makes them and their work unique.
Jen Ricketts - Silversmith

Jen in her workshop
Award-winning silversmith Jen Ricketts has perfected the silversmithing technique of hand saw piercing. She uses the finest of saw blades to hand cut her designs creating unique pieces of contemporary silverware.
Jen gained a First Class Honours Degree from De Montfort University in 2011 and then completed a year long silversmithing residency at Bishopsland. She then completed two years on the Starter Studio Programme in Sheffield where she now has a workshop.
Jen's current work concentrates on making bespoke functional silverware of intricate city skylines and intriguing silhouettes of park scenes and the countryside. Each piece is exquisitely detailed and can be made to commission, featuring images of special or memorable places.
Jen has received bullion awards from the Goldsmiths' Company London, the Malcolm Appleby Award for artistic excellence and, in 2015, Sheffield Town Hall and Sheffield Assay Office Master commissioned her to create a gift to the Queen from the City of Sheffield.
Read more about Jen's background and her work

You can see Jen and her work at our Desire Jewellery & Silversmithing Fair in Chelsea from 26-28 February.
