The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

Some people contacted us to let us know that two days in New York is a lot to commit to, so we are now offering a single day option. Come with AJF on Thursday, May 5 for a full day of art jewelry and conversation!

The exciting program starts with brunch and a panel discussion on collecting contemporary jewelry hosted by Norwegian Crafts (and sponsored by AJF), then on to a curator led tour of Bent, Cast & Forged: The Jewelry of Harry Bertoia at the Museum of Arts and Design, then end the day at Collective Design, visiting the booths of Sienna Patti with an exhibition of Jaime Bennett, and Ornamentum Gallery showing the work of Jiro Kamata.

Additionally, passes to see Spring Masters at the Park Avenue Armory will be provided by Didier, Ltd to attend on your own time.

There's more detailed information at the registration link. You must be a current AJF supporter at the $125 or higher level to participate. Space is very limited--only five slots--so don't delay! We'd love it if you came along.

Oh my stars

The RSC unveil beautiful star installation

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) is marking the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death with a season of exhibition and events.

On the 23 April 2016, on Shakespeare’s birthday and the 400th anniversary of his death they will unveil the newly-restored Grade II listed Swan Wing. Built in 1879 is the oldest part of the RSC’s theatres in Stratford-upon-Avon.

A highlight of the restored Swan Wing is For all time, a major new artwork commission by Brighton-based artist and designer Steven Follen.

For all time is made of 2,000 stainless steel stars suspended from the ceiling by fine wires to make the shape of a 3-metre tall human face. The face is surrounded by further metal stars, which loosely reflect the position of the constellations on Shakespeare’s birthday.

In other craft-related Shakespeare activity – the RSC is also exhibiting Well Said! – an exhibition of the playwrights’s most memorable quotes transformed by makers into artworks. Gary Breeze has carved a quote from Hamlet into a stone orb, the Brilliant Sign Company takes on Midsummer Night’s Dream and Karina Thompson embroiders a quote from The Tempest.
