What are the future rules of luxury? How is the merging of technology and materials enhancing the art of making? First staged in 2003, the London Design Festival (LDF) is one of the world’s most important annual design events. The Goldsmiths’ Centre joins over 400 events and exhibition stages across the design spectrum and celebrates the future of design and craft – from digital innovation and scale-modelling to consumer behaviour.

We are extremely excited to be launching a brand new competition at this year's Make Your Mark event.
The Make Your Mark Awards will be open initially to apprentices, and current or recently graduated students of precious metal related courses in the UK, with prizes being awarded for the best design of a precious metal piece incorporating a UK hallmark within the design. Both artistry and the way that the hallmark is used will be considered by the judging panel.
The Awards will be presented at a special event on the first evening of Make Your Mark, which runs on Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd November. Make Your Mark is in its third year and is fast-becoming the go-to industry event for students on precious metal courses in the UK. This year’s Benchpeg Awards will also be presented on the same evening.
More information and details on how to enter will be available shortly. Entries can be in the form of designs, models or finished pieces and there will be an exhibition of entries at Make Your Mark. There are some fantastic prizes on offer, so make sure you don't miss out on this amazing opportunity!

Shared Concerns: Melissa Cameron, Aran Galligan, Dan DiCaprio, Kaori Juzu, Jill Hermans, Caitie Sellers, Lynn Batchelder, and Vincent Pontillo-Verrastro
July 1-31, 2016
Artists’ Reception: Friday July 1, 6-8pm
An exhibition documenting the meeting of eight international artists, brought together to work in the Penland studios in the mountains of North Carolina. As a group, the artists were asked to share a word that encapsulated the main concern of their practice. Words were then swapped at random so that each person received a different word, and used it as a part of the inspiration for their new work, by interpreting the ‘concern’ of another group member.
The pieces begun during their Winter Residency at Penland and were finished in studios across the United States as well as in Australia and Denmark, where this diverse group of jewelry artists call home. Shared Concerns is curated by Melissa Cameron and Aran Galligan.
Call for Applications – The Guild of Enamellers’ 2017 Bursary Award
The Guild of Enamellers’ 2017 Bursary Award is now open for applications. Dear Rebecca,
Living and working in the UK has become a very different prospect over the last three weeks. As much as is possible at this stage I wanted to let you know what the Crafts Council’s immediate plans are in these uncertain times.
We know the power of craft is that it exists in all communities and it connects and empowers.
The strength of the craft sector in the UK is that it constantly evolves and has a rich history of encompassing craft techniques, skills, knowledge and makers from all over the globe. We are confident it will continue to do this and as an organisation we will certainly retain our outward-looking and inclusive attitude.
On many fronts it is business as usual for the Crafts Council. We will continue to run our talent development programmes, work to increase young people’s access to craft, create exhibitions, develop how craft can lead to innovation and build the market through the directory, our international programme and events like COLLECT.
But there are challenging times ahead and we are already looking at what the critical issues may be for the sector - be that change to free movement or a potential economic downturn. And some of our pre-Brexit concerns come into sharper focus now. The pipeline of future makers may well be reduced due to fewer EU nationals and the very realistic prospect of less funding for the arts.
However we are already uniting with the rest of creative industries to ensure that as a sector our voice, compassion and creativity can play a part in making the future as bright as possible. Working with Arts Council England, Creative Industries Federation and many other organisations across the UK we will continue to talk to government about how we can play a vital role in this.
At this point we want to hear your thoughts and concerns, and of course your constructive ideas. In time we will be sending out a survey but for now please do email us at comms@craftscouncil.org.uk.
Many thanks,
Rosy Greenlees
