Cayce Zavaglia - A Return to Paint through Embroidery
Cayce Zavaglia originally trained as a painter. She switched to embroidery in order to establish a non-toxic studio environment and to create a body of work referencing stitchery that she encountered growing up as a child. Her work is exclusively portraits of family, friends, and fellow artists.
The pieces are quite extraordinary and are scarcely larger than 8” x 10”. Each is executed with one-ply embroidery thread. What really wowed us was the fact that the back of Zavaglia’s pieces are just as artistically beautiful as the front. The backs show the paths of the threads making discorporate subjects of her exquisitely crafted portraits.
We’ve included two portraits front and back along with a close up of Zavaglia’s stitchery. Polymer clay artists, think of what could be done with an extruder, a small diameter circle disk, a great sense of color and lots of patience.
