Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.
We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

David Bielander winning a Swiss Design Award.

David Bielander (born 1968) develops intriguing jewellery pieces that defy user expectations and push the limits of what an ornament can be. Following apprenticeships in Basel and Schwäbisch Gmünd, Bielander enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he studied under professor Otto Künzli. He has since developed an unconventional, self-lead path where experimentation abounds, precious materials are subverted and pushed to the limit, and the user is intentionally pushed out of his comfort zone. Bielander lives and works in Munich, and his work has been shown in galleries and museums around the world.
The Confederation grants Bielander a Swiss Grand Award for Design in recognition of unconventional point of view and his critical method, which yield unconventional and striking results that set him at the forefront of international jewellery design. Prior to the Grand Award, Bielander has won the Swiss Design Award in 2012.

Seventh Annual International Gold Conference Gold
Creativity, Community, and Collaboration
Wednesday, April 26 - Friday, April 28, 2017
New York, NY
Peter Schmid, Nectar cuff bracelet, 2016, 24kt gold, sterling, green beryl, yellow beryl and blue beryl (aquamarine) gems, diamonds; 2.5 x 3.25 x 0.5 inches, photo: courtesy, Aaron Faber Gallery
Taking a wide-ranging look at gold and with a focus on jewelry, Initiatives in Art and Culture (IAC) explores the underpinnings of gold's abiding emotional power, allure, and enduring value. IAC's Gold Conference annually brings together representatives from all communities and disciplines to engage in a multi-faceted exploration of the power and meaning of gold.
"All creative art is magic," wrote Joseph Conrad, an "evocation of the unseen in forms persuasive." In the Seventh Annual Gold Conference, IAC considers the essential dialogue between the magician or artist and his audience, since experience of the magic or art is fundamental to its existence and to understanding "The Magic of Gold," as it applies to art, industry and its elemental state. Gold is a symbol of ultimate emotional power, allure, and enduring value. This affirmation forms the foundation of this conference's inquiry for which jewelry serves as the point of departure.
REGISTRATION : https://www.eventbrite.com/e/seventh-annual-international-gold-conf...
In two days of panels, talks and discussions involving over 40 renowned speakers and participants, Initiatives in Art and Culture explores craft, artistry, and manufacture of gold jewelry; training the next generation; current trends in retail including the use of "story-telling"; the future of multi-generational businesses; legislative and regulatory guidelines; ethical sourcing and responsible practice. Formal sessions are complemented by a reception at Aaron Faber Gallery and a kick-off event at ReinsteinlRoss, Goldsmiths. See the full speaker listing and schedule at the registration link.
Tribute to Manfred Bischoff
The Exit Is at the Entrance
By Liesbeth den Besten
Manfred Bischoff, Tribute to Manfred Bischoff
March 9 – April 8, 2017
Galerie Handwerk, Munich, Germany
The first impression of the Tribute to Manfred Bischoff exhibition is dominated by the large photographs on the walls of the Handwerkskammer exhibition space in Munich. They show the interior of the ancient Capuchin convent in San Casciano dei Bagni, Italy, where the German artist lived from 2000 until his death. The images are an inviting welcome because they give the illusion of entering someone’s personal space, yet there is a contradiction between the inviting picturesqueness of the interior photos and the way the exhibition is organized. The visitor must work hard to grasp the richness of 35 years of work by the artist, in the context of the contents of his legacy, which covers the walls, and in the context of the jewelry of his contemporaries. It is especially difficult because the visitor is not facilitated with a lot of supporting explanatory material. Yet this is one of the most interesting jewelry exhibitions I have seen recently.
