The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

Extinct

Crafts classified as ‘extinct’ are those which are no longer practised. For the purposes of this research, this category only includes crafts which have become extinct in the past generation.

Romilly Saumarez Smith & Verdi Yahooda.

An exhibition of works by jeweller Romilly Saumarez Smith and artist Verdi Yahooda. Each of the pieces have at their core Roman, Anglo-Saxon or Medieval metalwork, dropped or discarded hundreds of years ago. These scraps of ancient lives have been transformed by Romilly into wearable art – contemporary jewellery; while renowned artist Verdi, a long standing friend and artistic collaborator of Romilly, has made some exceptional photographic prints of the original metal finds.

Are You Looking For a Bridge Between University and a Professional Life as A Silversmith or Jeweller?

Bishopsland is now interviewing for the September 2017 intake.

Bishopsland is an internationally recognised, post graduate residential course which provides equal concentration on silversmithing skills and the professional skills needed to be able to work successfully as a self-employed maker. This integrated approach makes the course unique.
Bishopsland is committed to craftsmanship, innovation and helping makers to be sustainable, we offer a 46 week sustained intensive training course in design, technical and business skills.

Bishopsland is about the pursuit of excellence in contemporary silver. Our achievements are those of our Fellows, several of whom have award winning and international careers. Key emerging names in contemporary silver include Ndidi Ekubia MA (RCA), Theresa Nguyen, Miriam Hanid, Bryony Knox and Lin Cheung MA (RCA).

The cost of a one year residential course at Bishopsland should not be prohibitive to any talented emerging silversmith or jeweller. There are bursaries available to help support members of the course.

If you would like to be considered for an interview please send your c.v. to Glyn McIntosh at g.mcintosh@bishopsland.org.uk To find out more about Bishopsland our website is www.bishopsland.org.uk

 Kind regards

One of the many things Art Jewelry Forum does is provide grants and awards to artists within the field to fund their research and to celebrate their successes. We are pleased to share with you an interview with Cristina Filipe, the winner of the inaugural 2017 Susan Beech Mid-Career Artist Grant. Find out her plans for the future as she completes her research and prepares both a book and an exhibition about Portuguese art jewelry.

Very soon, AJF will be announcing the call for the 2018 Artist Award--stay tuned for more information.
