The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

For eleven years, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts has organized a summer conference to look at craft in a broader context. The conference is intimate in scale and encourages an active exchange between participants and presenters. Mornings are spent in presentations and lectures with afternoons filled with group discussion and studio based workshops that provide a way of exploring ideas through materials. This event has always been an important part of the work we do at the school, and supports our belief in creating an environment that values reflective thinking within an inclusive and creative community. https://www.haystack-mtn.org/programs/summer-conference-2018/

Haystack’s Open Studio Residency fosters a dynamic exchange of ideas among peers and provides two weeks of studio time and an opportunity to work in a supportive community of makers. The program accommodates approximately 50 participants—from the craft field and other creative disciplines—who have uninterrupted time to work in six studios (ceramics, fiber, graphics, iron, jewelry, and wood) to develop ideas and experiment in various media. Participants can choose to work in one particular studio or move among them depending on the nature of their work. All of the studios are staffed by technicians who can assist with projects. Please note that technicians will not be leading workshops. https://www.haystack-mtn.org/programs/open-studio-residency/

Renewal. Read our blog interview with Sue Gregor about environmental impact...

The new year often inspires changes, but jeweller Sue Gregor has been working on a significant change to her practice for some months now. These cuffs are clearly recognisable as Sue's work, but something's different. In the blog we catch up with Sue to find out more...

Welcome to our new jeweller Fern Robinson.

Made by Hand Online

We're very happy to launch a new collection of jewellery by Fern Robinson. We presented Fern with our Best New Business Award at Cardiff's Made By Hand fair last Autumn, and her collection of vibrant, playful jewellery has started to arrive. Colourful shards of crayon are embedded in tactile resin and combined with silver. "I aim to create a moment of joy and intrigue"

Reinvention. Meet Studio Jeweller Jo Pond

Born in Chiswick and based in rural Staffordshire, Jo Pond comes from a family of ‘Ponds’ who appear to have a genetic necessity for hoarding! As well as a range of her beautiful gold and platinum rings, we now have a new collection of Jo's one of a kind narrative brooches and pendants. These are made from intriguing combinations of materials, such as repurposed tins, silver, fragments of books, pearls and remnants of Victorian clothing.

Jo’s work has been exhibited internationally and showcased at selected exhibitions, including Schmuck in Munich, the V&A Museum in London, Price Tower Arts Centre in Oklahoma, Velvet da Vinci in San Francisco and Galerie Rob Koudijs in Amsterdam. Her solo exhibition 'Rationed', drawing on evocative World War 2 artefacts and touching personal stories, has just opened at the Vittoria Street Gallery in Birmingham. Details here.
