The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

Good luck Angie and Paul, thank you for such amazing mags in print and online over the last years!

As some of our readers may already know, after almost four decades of working in the UK crafts industry, we have made the decision to retire and close the doors on our 35+ years of publishing our magazine.

We've had a brilliant time throughout and met some amazing people - check out the Timeline in this final issue for just a few of the things we've done along the way - and we would like to say a huge thank you to all our readers, advertisers, writers and contributors for their wonderful support over the years.

With very best wishes for all that the future might hold for you.

Kind regards

Angie and Paul

Employment issues

1. Tax relief for self-employment - consultation

The Government is consulting on how it could extend the existing tax relief for self-funded work-related training by employees and the self-employed. Currently self-employed workers can deduct the costs of training incurred “wholly and exclusively” for their business where it maintains or updates existing skills, but not when it introduces new skills.

Reforming the rules so that the self-employed can deduct expenditure in these circumstances would support those learning new skills to expand their businesses. It would also make it more consistent with the existing rules for employees. (See sections 5.10 and 5.11 of the consultation document.)

The Crafts Council will be responding to the consultation to welcome and support the proposals. We’d urge you to do the same. The deadline is 8 June.
