The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

thread 2018 is fast approaching! Don't miss out on our flagship summer craft event, which will be commandeering the entire building on Sat 30 June.

A day ticket gives you access to a curated market place championing independent textile suppliers, makers and designers. There will be a series of talks throughout the day by leading textile professionals including a curator from the V&A and a leading sustainable fashion brand. It also includes exhibitions, including the ‘Stitch a Tree Project’ by artist Alice Kettle and free participation sessions and demonstrations. Remember discounted advance day tickets are available until noon on Fri 29 June. For an insight into the festival, the full programme can be found here.

thread 2018’s line-up of workshops by leading experts from across the UK is as diverse as ever. From introductions to traditional skills such blackwork, batik and bobbin lace making to contemporary needlepoint and hand stitch felt applique, you can even make your own summer wardrobe with Make Your Own Sustainable Shoes class or a Maker’s Atelier pull-on skirt. All workshops include entry to the festival and a tea or coffee, making them excellent value and a fabulous day out.

As part of the updates to our service provision, we are introducing some new business rules. These are designed to bring clarity to our internal processes, and ultimately make our service more efficient for you.

Technical developments with online packet submission, and process improvements with your online account were outlined by Superintendent Assayer Will Evans last month. Read more here.

These are underpinned by new rules as follows:

We will now require the completion of separate hallnotes for packets requiring mixed marking methods.

You can only request the application of one sponsor's mark per packet.

This is designed to bring the paper hallnote system in line with the online hallnote system.

We also have a new paper hallnote which is designed to reflect these changes. We hope it will be easier for you to complete.

You must complete all fields, each and every time you submit a paper hallnote to avoid delay. Packets with incomplete hallnotes are liable to be delayed while details are verified.

A benefit of the online system is that you are guided to complete the hallnote fully, and can't progress without all information we need from you. Read how to submit a packet online here.
Recap of rules: You can select one marking method, one type of hallmark, one metal and fineness, and one sponsor's mark per packet.

ARTICLE
IDEA AS MATERIAL
In English/Eesti Keeles
by Urmas Lüüs
"I have heard from several ceramic artists that they have found themselves thinking about this question: What’s more important, the vessel or the space inside the vessel? In a similar way, we keep asking as jewelry artists what weighs more: the piece of jewelry itself or the reason why it was made? The idea."
