The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

A Good Age: 5 UK craft commissions available

Description

A Good Age: Change in my Time – 5 craft commissions

Devon Guild of Craftsmen and Libraries Unlimited are seeking to commission five, UK based, professional older artists (born before 1948) to make new contemporary craft work responding to a theme of age and change within the artist’s lifetime. The commissioned works will be shown alongside craftwork made in local community workshops, in a celebratory exhibition ‘A Good Age’ at Devon Guild of Craftsmen in Autumn 2019. Proposals to be in all disciplines of craft including photography, printmaking and sculpture.

Criteria: any UK based contemporary craft practitioner over the age of 70 (born before 1948). Fee £2,500 per commission Deadline 3 September 2018, 9am Aim: to engage and support older people and as such these commissions are seen as an investment in older artists. These commissions are given as an example of validation of the artist, and aim to have a positive impact on society’s approach to ageing, and to contribute to the desire to keep making into older age.

Penland Residencies

Penland School of Crafts has four residency programs. The three-year Resident Artist Program provides low-cost studios and housing for seven or eight full-time artists who are at transitional points in their careers. The two-year Core Fellowship provides housing, studio space, and workshop access for nine emerging artists who work part-time for the school along with participating in workshops and developing their own work. The Winter Residency makes one to six weeks of studio access and housing available in January and February. The Andrew Glasgow Writers Residency brings a writer to Penland for several weeks each summer.

Focus On: Janine Partington

Above: Janine Partington, Flotsam, Leather

Our Maker in Focus is the multi talented Janine Partington. Known for her enamel on copper panels, Janine has become a firm favourite with our customers as she regularly develops fresh new designs, perfect for growing a collection!

As well as Janine's timeless copper and enamel work, we are delighted to present a collection of her new hand carved leather artwork; a bold new direction for Janine as a part of her recent MA studies. These have the qualities of a lino or wood block; the mark making from different tools is used to great effect, with varying size, direction and repetition. Paint is used carefully and sparingly to subtly highlight areas and incorporate colour to these abstract, unique pieces.
