The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

It’s nearly Great Northern time!

We're really looking forward to visiting The Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair next month. The event will feature over 150 of the UK’s leading designer makers, from established names to new graduate talent. Follow this link to see the full exhibitor list. The show opens on the 11th October with a Preview Evening and is on until the 14th October at the Upper Campfield Market, Manchester. Lots of our makers will be exhibiting, including (pictured above, left to right) Naomi James with her beautiful leaf imprinted silver, paper artist Jennifer Collier and Lynsey Walters with her colourful merino wool jewellery.

Made by hand jeweller Sarah Packington.

Using dyed acrylic and silver, Sarah Packington makes beautifully bold jewellery, manipulating her materials to create strong colours that play with light: “I enjoy playing with the properties of clear dyed acrylic: light, reflection, and strong colour. I hand manipulate the surface using etching, sanding, dyeing and polishing, and use contrasts of polished/matte and colour/clear to add interest. I aim for a highly finished quality to give my jewellery a precious feel, and I hope my designs are unique, fun and a pleasure to wear.”

Scholarship program “Designers in Residence” at Pforzheim

Every year from April to June the city of Pforzheim invites international young designers as part of the scholarship program “Designers in Residence” to Pforzheim. “Designers in Residence” addresses to young designers working in the fields of jewelery, fashion, accessory and industrial design. Three scholarship holders will be invited to the EMMA – Creative Center Pforzheim for a three – month working phase.

Fully equipped workplaces in the workshops will be available for the scholarship holders use, as well as accommodation for the period of the scholarship. If required, the workshops of Pforzheim University of Applied Sciences can also be used. In addition, each scholarship holder receives a monthly support and a reimbursement of the travel expenses for arrival and departure. The results of the work fellowship will then be presented in an exhibition at the EMMA – Creative Center Pforzheim as well as in cooperation with the Design Center Baden – Württemberg in Stuttgart.

CALL FOR ENTRIES

EiM_featureSNAG will celebrate its 50th Anniversary next year at the 2019 Chicago conference, The Loop: Coming Full Circle. The Exhibition in Motion (EiM) committee is seeking works that reflect this milestone. The EiM is a runway-type live exhibition event that takes place at the conference.

How do you see gold? Glitz, glam, indulgent, excessive, subtle or even demure? Gold goes beyond a material, it is a color, a signifier and a feeling. Translate the idea of gold literally, or let it transport you to a golden place.

As always you must, GO BIG–think feet, not inches. All works will be presented on live models and must be large scale and easily viewed from a runway.

Submissions of all kinds are allowed, from completed works to sketched proposals. The goal of the EiM committee is to present a selection of works that exemplifies and celebrates the diversity of the SNAG community.

Collaborations, class projects and international applications are encouraged! AURUM is open to all from the beginner to professional. All are encouraged to apply.

Become part of the legacy, apply by October 18, 2018. Entry form located at bottom of this page.

IMPORTANT DATES:
