The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

Prosthetics Focus Group
Our Institute of Making researchers are looking for people who wear a prosthetic limb to be part of a focus group exploring the Materials Library at the Institute of Making next Saturday 20th October from 2-4pm.

We want to hear from people who wear a prosthetic limb about how the sensory and aesthetic properties of materials affect their experience of their limb. We’d like to know what kinds of materials they would like to see in future prosthetics. Travel expenses and time will be reimbursed. Open Day: Plastics

Date: Saturday 27th October

Time: 1-5pm

Location: Institute of Making, Malet Place, UCL, London, WC1E 7JE Map

It's free, open to all, no bookings, just drop in from 1pm. Gates close at 5pm.

The use of plastic is undoubtedly a hot topic, but how much do we really know about the black sheep of the material world?

Join us to discover the miraculous material properties of plastics; test them physically with a variety of hands-on making processes; unpick the thorny issues of current plastics use, circular lifecycles and recycling processes; and take a look at plastics' remarkable cultural history.

Explore different types of plastics including celluloid and the history of cinema, 3D printed musical instruments composed of PLA, and furniture joinery with PET water bottles. Make a custom whisk by rapid-prototyping neon thermoplastic Polymorph, then immortalise your creation with a professional portrait before taking it home to be infinitely recycled.

The event will consider what ‘biodegradable’ and ‘sustainable’ really mean, ...
