The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

Measured Making

The #150mm Challenge

30th November 2019 - 18th January 2020

Exhibition Opens Saturday 30th November 12-2pm

The #150mm Challenge is a celebration of process, material, creativity and ingenuity in forged metal. It began when Hereford College of Arts lecturer Ambrose Burne set his students a ‘warm-up’ exercise, one that he regularly sets himself, to create something interesting out of a small rectangular piece of steel, 150mm x 20 mm square. The students had three weeks to design and make something using only the specified quantity of material

The challenge went on to catch the interest of blacksmiths around the world and Measured Making features 240 artworks from 19 countries. The artworks varied from playful figurative models to functional tools and abstract sculptures, demonstrating a diverse, creative and technical exploration of form and concept, made in response to the challenge.

The #150mm Challenge continues to connect an international community of blacksmiths, revealing a rich diversity of practice and discourse. https://us6.campaign-archive.com/?u=f9762e0bca4dd19f3b4f1f1ce&i...

INTERVIEW
LOVE JONSSON ON SMYCKOTEKET (JEWELIBRARY)
Rian Design Museum's Jewelry-Lending Program
by Nathalie Mornu

The Rian Design Museum, in Falkenberg, Sweden, is taking the concept of lending jewelry in a revolutionary direction for our field. Soon, with a program called Smyckoteket, visitors to the museum will have the opportunity to borrow a piece of contemporary art jewelry. (“Smyckoteket” is a portmanteau that translates as “jewelibrary.”) The point is to make borrowing a piece of jewelry as easy as borrowing a library book. More people will become familiar with art jewelry by having the opportunity to interact with and wear the work, making it more accessible to the public.https://artjewelryforum.org/love-j%C3%B6nsson-on-smyckoteket-jeweli...

Hannah Gallery presents the first solo show with Gigi Mariani in Barcelona. After his participation at the group exhibition The Alchemical Egg, Visions and Revelations of an Enigma in 2017, the Italian artist is featuring now Beyond the Black, introducing a selection of 14 new works, six Rings, five Brooches, two Necklaces, and one Bracelet. Research on works is focusing on the reduction of his language to the minimalistic expression and the geometry as well as leaving behind the regular use of the black niello as a central element to become a single accent on the pieces. https://hannahgallerybarcelona.net/exhibitions/beyond-black-gigi-ma...

Make Your Future: celebrating craft in the classroom

November 21st, 10am- 1pm, Thomas Tallis School, London SE3 9PX

The Crafts Council are hosting an event to demonstrate the importance of making in our schools.   We still have places available and we’re keen to welcome as many teachers, school SLTs and colleagues from the craft, cultural and FE/ HE sectors as possible— so please do share news of the event with your networks. (there is also a tweet to share below)

We’re looking forward to a really collaborative, galvanising event that will leave delegates with practical tools to develop the craft offer in their setting, wherever that may be! Highlights will include:

  • Lightning talks, featuring:

  • Vicky Bone, art teacher at Beckfoot Upper Heaton School in Bradford on fusing craft and science through knit and computer-aided design
  • Deepa Vekaria, Art and DT lead at Woodfield School on the transformational potential of craft in special school settings
  • Michelle Bernard, Executive Head Teacher and Partnership Leader for Halstow and Horn Park Schools, on the challenges of craft at primary level
  • Views from the Crafts Council, parents and young people about why craft education matters

  • Practical activities— from ceramics to sublimation printing— led by Thomas Tallis staff and students

  • Insight into craft careers from Cox London— leading a Q&A on how they’ve built their 70-person strong craft business

  • An exclusive resource pack including our brand-new Craft Skills Progression framework (EYFS- KS2), Craft Careers Pack and Craft Education snapshot infographic
