Clasps are baffling for many. Although a key element in jewelry and an opportunity for adding drama, many makers feel that clasps are their weakest link. Consequently, often little or no regard is given to the mechanical devices and attachments that allow us to pin/clasp/hang/open our work for wear. Explore the design and construction of three unique clasps with room for innovative design: an enclosed toggle clasp, a knocker clasp and a spring-loaded telescopic bracelet clasp. Expand your repertoire beyond the mass-produced parts that we see tacked onto otherwise beautiful handmade pieces.

Prerequisite: Fabrication 2 or experience.

John Cogswell will also teach Enliven, Enhance & Entrap: Creative Stone Setting, April 18-22, 2011.

John Cogswell is a master goldsmith and master silversmith who teaches at SUNY New Paltz. As an expert in the field, John has been a technical consultant and contributing author for several contemporary jewelry texts.
