This collection of 240 photographs documents 224 of the 20th century s top studio craft artists, makers working in fiber, clay, glass, metal, and wood. The photographs are by Paul J. Smith, Director Emeritus of the Museum of Arts and Design. Drawing on Smith's career of over 50 years as an arts administrator and curator, this book documents his extensive interest in meeting artists in their studios, as well as at conferences and national and international events.

By reflecting his firsthand experience of the changing currents in 20th-century craft, this book is a uniquely personal record that captures an important aspect of the history of the studio craft movement. These images, taken over a 30-year period, record and portray details of 224 artists. Collectively the photographs illustrate makers who have much in common and who are part of a community that share friendships, interests, and a belief in the importance of the handmade object.

Robert W. Ebendorf (1938- ) has been a critical figure in contemporary jewelry and metalsmithing for over five decades - as skilled at creating a vibrant and powerful community of makers and supporters as he is at making innovative and provocative work. With two essays and an interview with the artist as well as over 35 images, this book explores Ebendorf's work and philosophy in depth, as seen through the collection of the Racine Art Museum (RAM).

Ebendorf, who is represented at RAM by over 40 pieces, has also donated works by other artists - reflecting a generous nature that has helped the museum build its contemporary art jewelry collection. This spirit of sharing and networking characterizes Ebendorf's approach to life, the field of contemporary craft, and his own work. Both the museum and the field-at-large are better, stronger places thanks to Ebendorf's willingness to invest his time, energy and heart.

I took one a few years back, I thought it would be a snap, but it wasn’t as easy as I hoped. The hardest part? Keeping things STRAIGHT. Ever since, I have a sincere appreciation for book binding and the book arts in general and was therefore absolutely thrilled to come across the ‘Little Book of Bookmaking’ by Charlotte Rivers, a really interesting new publication by Potter Craft Publishing.

The book format is a handy square-ish format, at about 7.5 x 7.5 inches it is conveniently little enough to take along in your purse or schlep around your studio workspace - which you will probably want to do. The book content itself is, however, anything but ‘little’. And I mean that in the best possible way.

What is not to love here: Aside from the beautifully non-fussy, clean layout and handy pocket book size, let’s start with the first section, ‘Anatomy of a Book’ which features the typical case bound book in an image that’s really helpful for anyone who is thinking about getting started. I sure wished I had seen this overview before I got started with my own class back in the day. Following that, the author goes through the various how-to’s: folded bindings, sewn bindings, various page and cover treatments, she even covers experimental packaging, tools and materials.

What I like best about this book is that for every technique listed Rivers gives several illustrations which are all examples taken from international book artists’ work. And when I say book artists, I mean it. No pedestrian work in this book, it’s all high caliber, selected with a careful eye towards quality. Bonus segments deal with various paper treatments, a contributor directory, resources, blog listings and a list of more books for inspiration.

All told, this is a great buy for someone who is generally handy and has some craft experience. I would not recommend this for a beginner, it might be a bit too overwhelming. However, if you are generally interested in book making and need a quick push, this book should be high on your list for yourself or a crafty friend.

This book makes visible the inner workings of some of the world’s most iconic designs. From SLR camera to mantel clock to espresso machine, from iPad to bicycle to grand piano, every single component of each object is revealed. These disassembled objects show that even the most intricate of modern technologies can be broken down and understood, while beautifully illustrating the quality and elegance of older designs. Stunning photography is interspersed with essays by notable figures from the worlds of restoration, DIY, and design innovation who discuss historical examples of teardowns, disassembly, and reverse-engineering.

We may be capable, competent individuals yet find ourselves starved for avenues of engagement that provide more satisfying sustenance.

Furniture making, practiced as a craft in the twenty-first century, is a decidedly marginal occupation. Yet the view from the periphery can be illuminating. For woodworker Peter Korn, the challenging work of bringing something new and meaningful into the world through one's own volition -- whether in the arts, the kitchen, or the marketplace -- is exactly what generates the authenticity, meaning, and fulfillment for which many of us yearn.

In this moving account, Korn explores the nature and rewards of creative practice. We follow his search for meaning as an Ivy-educated child of the middle class who finds employment as a novice carpenter on Nantucket, transitions to self-employment as a designer/maker of fine furniture, takes a turn at teaching and administration at Colorado's Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and finally founds a school in Maine: the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, an internationally respected, non-profit institution.

This is not a 'how-to' book in any sense. Korn wants to get at the why of craft in particular, and the satisfactions of creative work in general, to understand their essential nature. How does the making of objects shape our identities? How do the products of creative work inform society? In short, what does the process of making things reveal to us about ourselves? Korn draws on four decades of hands-on experience to answer these questions eloquently, and often poignantly, in this personal, introspective, and revealing book.

Working with found objects, pages from old books, and dime-store trinkets, self-taught artist Joseph Cornell (1903–1972) transformed everyday materials into extraordinary universes. By collecting and carefully juxtaposing his treasures in small, glass-front boxes, this pioneering artist invented visual poems exploring themes as varied as the night sky, the romantic ballet, glamorous movie stars, and bird habitats.

Joseph Cornell's life, his sources of artistic inspiration, and his intriguing boxes are presented in beautifully collaged spreads in this 80-page book. The book's design, inspired by Cornell's boxes, collages, and letters, tells his story in both words and images.

A project section aims to inspire the reader to create their own box assemblages. Ideas and materials are suggested for six boxes, including habitat boxes, game boxes, and museum boxes, all based on significant themes in Cornell's work.

Also included are fun materials to get the creative process started—five sheets for collaging, a ready-to-assemble miniature box, a magnifying lens, colored plastic, and printed game pieces—all housed in a sturdy hinged box with a removable grid.

The perfect book to give someone who is just starting to become interested in collecting and assemblage work and would appreciate guidance.

When I came across In Flagrante Collecto at a used bookstore in Denton, TX last week, this realization hit me:

People will collect absolutely everything. From things you would expect such as stamps and baseball cards to the unusual such as sugar packaging, images of mug shots, tobacco cutters and cigar bands, used soap, skulls made from sugar, car fresheners, wanted signs - and of course everything in between.

The reasons why people collect are just as diverse as the objects that are collected. Some collect for the visual pleasure of surrounding themselves with certain objects, others collect because they like lists, it is a way to keep order in a chaotic world. Some collect to save objects from landing in the trash, others like to have the first/finest/most outrageous of everything. You can probably all add motivations to this list easily.

Beautifully photographed and lovingly assembled - with a wink and a nod towards the humorous and the grotesque - this book is a find. It seems that it is currently out of print but there are still enough second hand copies in decent shape around (at a great price) to last us a while.

This is definitely one of those book gifts you should consider giving to yourself!

This is what the publisher has to say about this book:

According to author Marilynn Gelfman Karp, collecting is a calling; and those who are driven to collect unloved objects are the purest collectors of all. In this literary and sophisticated celebration of humble objects, Karp shares her passionate insights on what she calls the "rapture of the capture."

In Flagrante Collecto is a vividly illustrated book that is equal parts cultural history, personal memoir, and coffee table objet d'art. The 1000 color photographs that fill this book tell stories of lost and found objects. Ignored by many, these figural matchbooks, buttons, erasers, cigar rings, pictorial seed packets, and other items are hunted and gathered with Ahab-like tenacity at flea markets, antique shops, and collectible shows worldwide.

This lovingly assembled volume is a fascinating compendium of material culture as told by an incredible array of objects.
