6 creative exercises to celebrate the end of 2014

At the end of the year it’s a natural process to want to review what happened, and sometimes more importantly what didn’t happen. It’s often a quieter time, a time of reflection.

And before you start creating new plans for the New Year it’s good to take stock of where you are, good to have a clear out but also to celebrate the previous year.

Many creatives consistently want to improve, always have new ideas, it can always be better, it’s never good enough, constantly moving on to the next project (before the last one is finished even), always moving the goal posts.

I invite you to celebrate 2014, to stand still for a moment, to be proud of what you did (especially if it’s not been a great year!)

1. The-Design-Trust-New-Years’-card-cum-creative-business-planner

TDT Xmas card 2014 4I haven’t sent out Christmas card for years, but this year I decided to work together with letterpress designer Rachel Stanner of Prickle Press in London to create a little keep sake for all our Business Club members, partners and other friends.

Just before Christmas 250 ‘cards’ were send out all over the UK and abroad (as far as LA and Australia!). The card folds open and asks questions such as:

    What are your 3 core values for 2015? (Options include: productive, colourful, playful, traditional, collaborative, authentic, zestful, risky, kind, poetic, refreshing, easy, noisy, magical to hungry!)
    What was the best and worst thing about your life & business in 2014?
    What was the biggest lesson?
    What do you need to rant about to move on to 2015?
    What do you want more of in 2015? What do you want to have less of?
    What do you want to achieve by 31 December 2015? Salary, turnover, hours working per week, holidays, new clients, new products or services, new collaborations & partnerships, new challenges & adventures, professional development & training?

2. 99 things you learnt this year

I love making lists! What’s interesting with creating extra-long lists is that often you start with your automatic response. The more interesting ideas and revelations come up at the end of the list!

Get into action:

Get yourself a lovely notebook and just start writing down and keep going! What were the people and events that really mattered in 2014?

 
3. Your year overview

Sending our New Year’s card to all our Business Club members, partners and friends was a great way to review the year: the people I met and had worked with, the events I spoke at or attended, the places I visited (for the first time).

Not one to miss!!

Applications due 23 January for the next International Interstudio Residency which includes airfare to Australia, a flat, up to AU$1000 in materials reimbursements, and 7-8 weeks of studio access across workshops. Let's see those applications!

interested in exhibiting and demonstrating on the 26th July at the Rural Life Centre’s main annual event, Rustic Sunday? The stand would be free of charge and the museum is even offering demonstrators a free weekend pass so that they can set up the day before and leave the morning after the event if they wish to. (There is a large camping/caravan area alongside the 10-acre site of the museum.) The museum is keen to attract younger craftspeople to this event.
 
Some crafts are obviously more relevant to the ‘rural’ and ‘village’ ethos of the museum than others - for example, I know that the Surrey Wood Turners are going to be on site that day. And some crafts are more possible to demonstrate to the public than others.
 
I act as the museum’s volunteer press officer, so it is my job to publicise events. We are already working hard  to try to boost visitor numbers to around 1000.
 
Feel free to get back to me, or to this year’s organiser, Rod Dengate. You could also take a look at the museum’s website which is www.rural-life.org.uk and I know he would be pleased to show anyone around who is interested in participating.
 
The Rural Life Centre is an accredited museum of village life and is located in Reeds Road, three miles south of Farnham.

CALLING ALL MA ART STUDENTS: EXHIBITION OPPORTUNITY!

 

After the success of PHOTOMASTERS 2014, seeing over 2000 visitors to the exhibition, we are planning to extend this success by producing an ARTMASTERS exhibition as well!

 

The Old Truman Brewery and the producers of Free Range Shows are creating the ARTMASTERS showcase of MA Art students and recent MA graduates work, to coincide with ARTBLOCK, a week of different Art shows and fairs at The Old Truman Brewery.

 

The Old Truman Brewery is home to vast exhibition spaces, consisting of clean white washed walls. The site is a creative hub, attracting a diverse footfall of +30,000 people (estimated weekend average) making it a perfect platform for emerging creative.

 

We are currently looking for MA students and recent MA graduates to take part. The more interest we get from candidates the bigger and better we can make the show!

 

How we envisage the ARTMASTERS showcase to work:

 

• Each exhibitor will hire approx. 2.5 metres of wall space

• The estimated cost will be around £200+VAT per candidate (rates are dependent on final number of exhibitors)

• Proposed dates: Thursday 15th/Friday 16th – Sunday 18th October 2015

Dear artists,
 
I am extremely pleased to announce that applications for ARThouse Open Studios 2015 are now open!
 
ARThouse is Richmond upon Thames’s annual Open Studios Festival celebrating the variety of creative talent that exists within all corners of the borough, allowing visitors to experience the unique environments in which artists live and work. This year will be the 20th year the open studios has taken place and we’d like to invite all designer-makers, artist groups, community groups, and schools, to join together to showcase the borough’s creativity. ARThouse 2015 will take place between 26th – 28th of June and 3rd - 5th July. The festival may also include the opportunity to exhibit in a temporary group pop-up exhibition in an empty shop in Twickenham, and more information on this exciting development will follow the application deadline.
 
Application forms for individuals, groups (small, medium, large), community groups, and schools are attached along with the guidelines for entry. Please do read the guidelines carefully before submitting your application. Application forms can also be downloaded from the website www.arthouseopenstudios.co.uk  where you can also find more information on the festival and how to make application payments online.
 
The deadline for receiving applications and payment is Friday 27 February 2015.
 
Please do spread the word to fellow artists in the borough, and I look forward to working with you all for the 2015 festival. Should you have any queries at all about taking part please don't hesitate to send me an email.
