Dear JSN,

I'm currently organising a traditional market for Fleet Christmas Festival and we're looking for high quality crafts makers as stallholders. I wondered if you'd be interested yourself and if you could promote it to your craft contacts?

Here's some info...

Stallholders are invited to book a pitch at a great new event on the 20th November 2013, from 4 - 9pm.

Over 8,000 people are expected to attend, so don't miss this wonderful chance to advertise your offerings. The Fleet Christmas Festival will include the Christmas lights switch on, Father Christmas's arrival and a festive market of Christmas gifts, foods and street foods. We are now inviting applications for our Desire Fairs in Chelsea and Winchester from silversmiths and jewellers working in any media. Demand for spaces is expected to be extremely high so you are urged to apply early.
http://www.desirefair.com/exhibitor_info.html

LONDON After a number of years staging the fair at Richmond upon Thames, and more recently Kensington, we are now taking the show to Chelsea. The Old Town Hall is situated right on the High Street (or specifically Kings Rd!), and will already be known to many of you as it has been a popular venue for design led events for many years..

WINCHESTER Guildhall, which is situated at the end of the High Street, making the venue very accessible. This period building is both well known and easily reached from the town centre car parks. Winchester is situated among one of the most affluent areas in the South, making this an ideal location.

Both shows incorporate full shell scheme (grey Expoloop), to ensure the clean and uniform appearance to the show that is expected for these type of events. It will also be possible to rent display cases and lighting. Uniformed security will be present (24 hour cover) throughout the show and also during the build up and breakdown, along with a uniformed presence outside the venues at closing times.

Private View evenings are held at both events for exhibitors’ past customers. Exhibitors will be entitled to an unlimited amount of invitations to the private views.

Featured Maker - October 2013

Each month we will be turning the spotlight on one of our regular makers, to give you an insight into their work, and to direct you to more information about them.

Adrian and Lesley Doble — Partners in Pewter

Coming from Medical Research and Multinational Business Administration, Adrian and Lesley Doble of "Partners in Pewter" found that they had many useful design, technical and communication skills.

Their chosen medium is very versatile and presents so many opportunities that they find that the 24 hour day length is often too short. In their Victorian cottage they cover all aspects of the craft from designing, mould-making, casting, finishing, photography, advertising, and book-keeping.

The Partners spend all their time working the pewter and using their overlapping range of skills to meet the commercial demands. Lesley has a particularly good eye for what the public will buy and concentrates on the bigger casting runs while Adrian is happier creating bespoke pieces and running the office. He needs to be restrained from using his more experimental designs as they are usually too quirky for the public!

They both began by learning the repousse technique that is particularly useful in the context of commissions as it allows pictures and text to be combined. Many of the more prestigious pieces are ordered by Livery Companies, Churches, Rotary Clubs and Masonic Lodges. Adrian and Lesley both enjoy meeting people at the Craft Shows as it gives them the chance to talk about pewter and to explain how they achieve some of their remarkable effects. Many commissions have resulted from these chats during which time customers learn just how uniquely appropriate the end design can be as a result of the partnership between the client and the artist.

They have always believed that craft items should have an obvious function as well as looking attractive and being well designed. Their approach has also been to produce gifts for men as well as for women. It would give them great pleasure to meet you at one of the Craft in Focus shows.

Adrian and Lesley's work can be seen at our Hyde Hall, Crowthorne, Sevenoaks and Wisley shows this autumn.

Jerwood Makers Open
Jerwood Visual Arts has announced the call for entries for Jerwood Makers Open 2014, inviting applied artists from across all craft disciplines to submit proposals for this maker-led commissioning opportunity.
Now in its fourth year, Jerwood Makers Open offers applied artists in the early stages of their careers a unique opportunity to develop their creative ideas independently of specific commissioning structures. Open to UK residents within 10 years of graduating or setting up their practice, this opportunity will award five artists with bursaries of £7,500, allowing them to freely create new work. This resulting work will be exhibited at Jerwood Space, London next summer before touring the UK.
The five artists are to be selected by an independent panel comprising foremost figures in the world of applied art and design, including Vicky Richardson, Director of Architecture, Design and Fashion at the British Council; Junko Mori, artist and silversmith and Claire Catterall, Director of Exhibitions and Learning at Somerset House.
In considering proposals, the selectors will debate as a panel what they consider to be outstanding and original practice in the applied arts and will explore this through their selection. They will also consider how this particular opportunity could catalyse potential positive developments to individual makers’ practice and profile.
First launched in 2010, Jerwood Makers Open is a leading initiative from Jerwood Visual Arts that aims to recognise the significance of making practice and process within contemporary visual arts. Previous recipients of the award have included rapid prototype jeweller Farah Bandookwala, installation artist Keith Harrison, ceramicist James Rigler, glass artist Louis Thompson, conceptual maker Maisie Broadhead and Japanese paper-cut artist Nahoko Kojima.
Jerwood Visual Arts, developed and managed by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation, is committed to supporting and showcasing contemporary applied arts practice. The Jerwood Applied Arts Prize ran for 11 years (1996 to 2007) in partnership with the Crafts Council. This was followed from 2008 to 2010 by Jerwood Contemporary Makers, a nominated exhibition series which provided a platform to show new and emergent work in the field of making.
Deadline for submissions: 5pm Monday 18 November 2013
For more information and details of how to apply visit the Artist Opportunities page at www.jerwoodvisualarts.org
