Studio Space & Hiring Space

As well as a wide range of courses, Making Space also offers space for hire, whether it’s for a team building event or private hire, and we can organise a bespoke creative event for birthday parties, a celebratory event or a work away day. If you are a maker, you can hire specialist equipment at competitive rates - or come along to our Open Access Saturdays to use workshop space and have the opportunity to network with other makers. We now offer short-term leases on our individual studios as well as normal longer rentals. Prices range from £125-£200 a month – ideal if you need more space for a big show or event or want to trial a professional studio set up.

The Sussex Guild Contemporary Craft Show
The Guild will be showing at spacious new venue, Midhurst Rother College. Highly skilled designer makers will provide a colourful feast of creativity. The show is perfectly timed for Christmas shopping and, with about fifty members of the Sussex Guild showing their beautiful and varied work, visitors will be spoilt for choice.

Call for Artists and makers based in and around Surrey
Surrey Artists Open Studios summer event 8 - 23 June 2013
If you are interested in publicising your artwork; networking with other artists; gaining access to opportunities and creative events and gaining the opportunity to sell your work direct to the public then register to take part in our annual summer Surrey Artists Open Studios event.
The Surrey Open Studios event is open to all artists and makers based in and on the borders of Surrey. All participating artists are offered the opportunity to take part in our extra promotional events including our launch and taster exhibitions.
All participating studios are provided with marketing material to help promote themselves, this includes a professionally produced brochure, posters, postcards and studio signage.
To take part, we require all of our artists and makers to join our annual membership: SAOS. SAOS offers artists and makers in the county of Surrey vital support to develop and sustain their art practice. The membership fee is just £40, you receive monthly bulletins on opportunities and events, your own webpage promoted on Find A Surrey Artist, access to a programme of events coordinated by the SAOS team, including: training, networking and professional artwork photo shoots.

Other events at Making Space

24 November - Circle Brooches with Sarah Macrae: There are still places available for this exciting one-day workshop on Saturday 24 November. Participants will learn new skills and come away with a beautiful finished roller printed brooch (see image). Sarah will explain and teach you all the stages to design and make a stunning piece of jewellery. All materials supplied. The workshop runs from 10am–3pm, price £48.

Saturday 1 December (11am-4pm) & Sunday 2 December (12pm-4pm) - Making Space Christmas Craft & Design Fair: Making Space will be transformed into a gallery and selling space giving you the chance to purchase some extra special Christmas presents. All of our resident makers will be in their studios, joined by some hand picked guest makers showcasing a range of design and crafts including jewellery, ceramics, textiles and glass.

Saturday 26 January - Stone Set Ring with Sarah Macrae: Spend a day learning how to make a simple stone set ring with a cabochon setting from a selection of stones provided by the tutor. For beginners or intermediate jewellers. The workshop runs from 10am-3pm, price £48.

Saturday 27 April – Sgraffitto Enamelling on Copper with Linda Connelly: Enamelling is the art of fusing glass to metal - learn the technique and make items such as pendants and earrings. Suitable for beginners or more experienced learners.

Date to be confirmed – Moving Jewellery with Kate Groombridge: Spend the day making a stylish pendant or ring using simple silversmith techniques. Create a stunning piece which incorporates moving elements. The course is suitable for beginners and intermediate level participants and will include cutting, soldering and shaping. The workshop will run from 10am-3pm, price £48.

Open Access Saturdays

Just a reminder that there will be Open Access sessions at Making Space on Saturday 17 November and Saturday 15 December.

Our Open Access sessions are a fantastic opportunity for you to come and get on with your own work at your own pace, networking with like-minded creative people and getting time and space to further your skills. The sessions are about enabling people with some experience the freedom to get on with their own self-directed work. Open Access is also the perfect opportunity to practice skills including those learnt on previous Making Space courses. While these sessions are untaught, an experienced jeweller will be on hand throughout the day should you require technical advice or assistance.

We ask that all attendees complete a check-list of requirements to confirm that they have the skills and knowledge required to use the tools and equipment in the jewellery studio safely and without supervision. You will need to bring your own materials but the use of the space, equipment and a technician is covered in your booking fee.

The session cost is £30 per Saturday for which the space will be available from 10am to 3pm. Parking is free behind Making Space on a Saturday. Alternatively you can book three sessions for just £81 (to be taken within a five month period) - recommended if you are working on a larger project that will take more than one session to complete.

Join us November 14th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at the Wishcamper Center, USM Portland for an exciting evening exploring Product Design!

Are you interested in Product Design? Does your company need Product Design? Could your company use the services of an industrial “product” designer? Find out why you can’t ignore Product Design if you want to stay competitive in an increasingly complex marketplace.

The design process is a physical transformation of an idea based upon needs or wants by consumers or the marketplace at large, into a product that is appropriate to its purpose. Product designers take a systematic and creative approach to conceptualizing and evaluating ideas before turning them into tangible products. Product design is vital in creating loyal customers for businesses large and small, local and international.

Moderator Patric Santerre, of ARCADIA designworks will give a brief overview of the definition of Industrial “Product” Design, and weave in its history in Maine.

We will hear from a local start up, Bitzy Baby, whose founders Whitney and Seabren Reeves decided to re-design a product when the existing marketplace was not meeting their needs as parents.

Nicholas Yardy Ph.D. the Director of Marketing and Technical Service at SAPPI, a global pulp and paper company with mills in Maine, and a commitment to creating new operations through innovation and design throughout the world, will share their growth story and the importance of product design for the business to business market.

ACJ East Midlands

‎Focus Gallery Nottingham will be exhibiting some fantastic jewellery from 1st November 2012 until 15th January 2013 from the members of ACJ East Midlands.

The exhibition will feature several jewellers based in The East Midlands, and will include Helen Shere (ShereDesign - Contemporary Silver Jewellery), Kate Bajic Hand Made Jewellery, Ruth Gordon Jewellery, Ruth Wood Jewellery, Gail Ferriman, and Karen Mckinley.

16-18 November 2012
Our next Desire Jewellery & Silversmithing Fair will take place in Winchester from 16-18 November. This year the event features 80 designer makers including a display by a talented group of British silversmiths under the banner of 'Festival of Silver'. There is an enormous variety of jewellery available and the event features jewellers working in gold, silver, aluminium, brass, titanium, niobium, copper, bronze and platinum and incorporate glass, enamelwork, gemstones, pearls and beads into their work. All exhbibitors have been selected for their superb and innovative craftsmanship and have a genuine passion for the work they create. Visitors can see and purchase from an exciting range from both emerging British talent as well as more established designer makers.

Anyone celebrating a special occasion may also like to speak to the makers about commissioning bespoke pieces of jewellery or silverware. Several visitors in the past have commissioned engagement or wedding rings at the event and, by working with the designer maker, have been able to have input into the design and come up with something that means so much more and is completely individual. Many of the makers will also be happy to speak about remodelling jewellery to give it a more contemporary feel.
