Drawing inspiration from The Wu Xing (Chinese: 五行; pinyin:
wǔxíng), or the Five Movements, we enclosed the historic Chinese
philosophy into the tea set and express them through forms,
materials and symbols. <a href=

Bifei Cao: By researching the
characteristics of Yixing clay teapots, I created the tea set
that incorporated the size of Yixing teapots with Western
contemporary metalsmithing concepts and techniques. These forms
that I created are drawn from the nature, which relected the idea
of five elements; clouds float in the air; trees grow up from land
developing with human-made buildings mutually. Everything is
related but also restrainted with each other in the
world.

Adam R. Criscuolo: Being a
furniture designer and woodworker, I was intrigued when Bifei
introduced the Wu Xing 5 element theory of the world, which
included wood. Having grown up with the backdrop of dense New
England foliage, wood is thoroughly woven into the fabric of my
subconscious- and is among other things, a key source of
inspiration, and choice material. The diagram shown above was
a great platform to work off of. Being a functional piece
first, I allowed the parameters of a basic tea set guide the design
of the piece. The breakdown of elements into abstracted
geometric forms created natural platforms for each element that
Bifei produced in metal.

Our goal was to create a piece that combines both Andrew’s
interest in Damascus and Sun’s work in wire framework. We decided
to use materials that we each have an affinity for; forge welded
steel and sterling silver. We chose a spoon, which is one of the
most basic flatware utensils. Since we selected a basic item, we
intended to highlight contrast and absurdity: using steel for the
spoon instead of silver, and adding a wire-form handle to the
spoon. We tried to create an aesthetic contrast between the classic
decorative spoon design and architectural geometric wire frame
handle.

Sarah and I started our collaboration with a phone brainstorming
session. We talked about how we could create a piece which
dealt with a contemporary meal and tableware setting while
incorporating the culture where we resided together in 2009,
Milwaukee Wisconsin. After pondering our lifestyles
in Wisconsin, fried food quickly came to mind
as a staple of midwestern meals due to the boom
of fast food
chains which have rapidly spread across rural lands.
We decided to stick to our Wisconsin similarities and focused
on creating a piece which incorporated the classic
Milwaukee Friday
night fish fry held weekly at every local diner and
church. "Home Fried" is an absurd take on eating a meal where
every piece of the meal including the drink and utensils are all
fried together. It displays two pieces of fish, a mound of
crinkle fries, a single lemon wedge, a fork and knife, and a soda
emerging from the top of a hinged steel wire fry basket.

As two artists who typically work in materials such as
silver, copper, brass, found objects, and even latex, we approached
this call for entry as an opportunity to explore a process and
material new to both of us. We branched out of our preferred
personal aesthetics and opted to meet in the middle to make one
object for the table. We collaborated throughout the entire
process, from brainstorming, design of the object, and execution of
the final product. In working with a new material, polystyrene, and
a new process, vacuum forming, we encountered obstacles that
challenged us to work together to problem solve. The final result
is a unified piece, created by the flux of two artists
combined efforts and true co:operation.

Statement:

Elliot Gaskin and Nick
Mullins came together for the first time to collaborate for
Co:Operation Tableware. Both artists brought their strengths to the
table. Mullins’s personal aesthetic is loose and intuitive while
Gaskin’s is tight and modular. Together the team created a
collection of five pieces titled Primiware. With a sense of humor
and shared interest in organic materials the artists worked
together in constructing each piece of Primiware. The collection
includes a fork, knife, melon baller, whisk and spaghetti
spoon.
