Thanks for the support! Beyond Garbage is my baby, but she's being raised by the whole village, so the project depends on contributions of links, references, resources, and creativity from other people. Please don't be shy about chipping in! Erin - thanks for the DIY resource - I'll put it in the Resources page Books section. And I'll look for it for myself. Can never have to many good references...

D.I.Y.: Design It Yourself (Design Handbooks) by Ellen Lupton
"A fun-filled, project-based primer in visual literacy that encourages the aesthetically inclined to get intimate with the design process and become a DIY digital cowboy." --Utne

"Design is a way of thinking and creating that is accessible to everyone." --Coral Gables Living

"Ellen Lupton believes that you - yes, you - are a brilliant designer. It does'nt matter if you are colorblind, or if you can't draw., or if you have never been sure whether shagreen is something wallets are made of or something that goes in salads at fancy restaurants. " -- Jeff Turrentine --Staten Island Advance, March, 2006

"Finally - good design for the masses! This fabulously designed (of course) book was produced collaboratively by the self-described bastard children of the fine arts: MICA graphic design students and faculty....Each page is an open invitation to reinvent your world, as well as yourself." -- Goli Mohammadi --Make: Technology on Your Time

Yes! Anything creatively made from recycled materials is acceptable. The hope is to go "beyond" the material in the expression. We just want to get images and inspiration out there to pass the word along. But anything made with the monthly material would be especially welcome and could be posted prominently on that month's page. Go to the blog to see what it's all about and how to join. You can be a casual commenter or really jump in and post images of your work (after going through a brief and not-too-strenuous sign-up process with WordPress to be approved as an Author). This month (December) is newspaper (with a one-page challenge).

So glad this exists at crafthaus! Happy to join in.
I started a blog related to this subject about a month ago - http://beyondgarbage.wordpress.com. We play with a new material each month to see what the possibilities are (wearable and non-wearable). It's a totally volunteer, no guarantees excuse to mess around with recyclables and reusable materials. We just finished our first month - plastic supermarket bags - and so far only two people have posted their experiments, but three more are on the way. Check it out! Join us or just watch from the sides. If you or anyone you know does work related to the monthly topics, we'd love to add them as inspiration - links, photos, whatever... Thanks!
