We metalsmiths love our hand tools with a passion that can border on obsession. A quality hand tool is familiar to us like a good friend, reliable and there when we need it. However, occasionally our work may change direction and some of our tools outgrow their usefulness. They are left collecting dust and are taking up space. We would like to pass them on to someone who can use them again, but who to give them to? Here’s an idea: Donate your no-longer used tools to the Tool In The Hat project at SNAG and you can solve that problem. By doing so you help a fellow metalsmith who is just starting out in our profession. Your tool will no longer gather dust and will be cherished again by someone who can actually use it. Don’t we all remember our own first hand-me-down hammer?

What can you contribute? We are looking for old tools, new tools as well as metal bits, old books that still have function, unusual materials such as plastics or wood. All odds and ends from your studio environment are welcome contributions, basically anything gently used (or new) that could be of interest to a fellow metalsmith.

To donate an item, simply sign it up during conference registration or email Dianne deBeixedon at ddebeixe@odu.edu at any time. Then drop your item off at the conference desk. It’s that easy. Thank you!
