Project Timeline June-August 2017

Project Description:
Over the past decade, new research has emerged shedding light on the influence of gut bacteria on our health, mood, behavior and feelings. Once dismissed as incidental, a flourishing micro-biome has been linked to healthy brain development and disease resistance.

I am applying for a Crafthaus Project Grant in order to help fund a collaborative community art installation examining the elusive world of the Microbiome. This installation will explore the idea that microscopic organisms can have a large impact how humans function in the larger world.

In a series of four group sessions, installation participants will fabricate personal interpretations of micro-organisms out of clay. My role in this project will be to facilitate the interactive learning sessions and amalgamate the resulting raw clay bits and pieces into a larger tile installation. It is my goal to weave together the material explorations in a manner that speaks to both our individuality and shared humanity as biological organisms. The final installation will involve a wall of clay tiles as well as projections of the group building process.

The installation will take place at ArtProduce (http://www.artproduce.org/about.html) a multi-use community space that “fosters community through arts, education and public culture.”It is my hope to gather as diverse a group of community participants as possible. I already have interest from a veterans group, a group that provides free arts educations to at risk youth and several schools in the San Diego, CA area.

I want to provide an opportunity for community members to explore a fascinating aspect of our world in a non-liner, creative manner. Possibly igniting interest in both the natural world as well as the artistic process.

If you receive the grant, how will the funds support your project?

The $500 grant would be divided up in the following manner;

Clay - $150
Firing - $100
Compensation for a student assistant - $100
Publicity - $150

Project Description:
I am currently an artist in residence at the Estonian Academy of Arts, in Tallinn Estonia. I will be working in Tallinn for at least the next month. The landscape and architecture of the city is dotted with often-abandoned, soviet architecture.
Factories, prisons, and industry form the Soviet era stand and solemn crumbling monuments, to an unpleasant history or repression. Estonia’s, relatively newfound independence, (1991), has welcomed a new generation. They occupy and take over these Structures breathing new life and promise into them. Young artists’, entrepreneurs, gardeners and dreamers are creating a new future in this landscape.
I will work to create a series of steel vessels. I will incorporate design elements from the surrounding industrial infrastructure. The objects produced will be vessels that each relate directly to gardening. I am using the growth of plants as metaphor for the promise of renewal. It is also a direct representation as new food bearing gardens and green spaces are being created in the ruins of a bygone era. The landscape is rich with texture created by decay, but small plants break through the cracks and grow towards a new future.

The Funds will go directly into my materials, Steel, patinas, paint, wax, etc.

Project Timeline: To begin immediately. Ending with exhibition in Spring 2018.

Project Description:

My husband is a Printmaker. I am a Jewelry Artist. And our four-month-old son is as yet undecided. But together, we three are already heavily involved in collaboration.

So far my husband and I have braved two collaborative exhibitions and are now scheduled for a third in Spring 2018 at the Texas A&M University Gallery as part of their limited exhibition series, Artist Couples.

Our previous artistic entanglements combined the monolithic with the infinitesimal, the blusterous with the soft-spoken, the mythical with the painfully real. My husband drags in his ongoing tussle with the psychologically charged Midwestern landscape, vast but not sublime in its oppression. While my contribution is a desire to grieve well, to internalize what has been lost into jewelry and objects to be worn and carried into the relentlessly moving world, reminders that we are still growing, that all has not stopped, and there is still much room for good.

With this past in mind, our next synthesis of materials and feeling endeavors to bisect the heavy rage of loss and the quiet excitement of newness; that newness being the exclusively happy contribution of our still quite novel little boy. Already, as parents we both see changes in our work, new colors, surprising forms, a lightness of intention only available through a melting of fear.

So far, the work itself has evolved from jewelry, to objects, to prints, to collagraph prints of objects, to installations, and back again. We have worked separately to create individual pieces that speak to one another in pairs and groupings. And we have tied our studios together, building singular pieces despite the exchange of opposing wills. This new work promises a similar method of creation, with a few lingering hard-won lessons.

Lately, in soft contrast to that Midwestern oppression, my husband’s studio has filled with line etchings of rolling landscapes and wide-mouthed tornadoes overtaken with lighthearted storm clusters of multicelled chrystalline color fields. At least, that’s how I view them. Meanwhile, my last body of work depended heavily on the quick modeling of wax and slow growth of metallic layers through electroforming. Fortunately, this equipment is no longer available to me (change is sometimes better thrust upon us), and so I have been pressed to find a new translation for these still-evolving thoughts. Incredibly, as if in direct answer, I recently received a complete collection of donated stone cutting tools, equipment, even the stones themselves, everything I need to begin a new obsession. But with no appropriate space to house and operate this machinery, I remain desperate to begin practicing this new alphabet of solid forms.

With a little over a year to develop this next great collaborative effort, I am excited to see where these changes will take us, together and apart, as a family and as artists. And we look forward to staying connected to the Crafthaus community with tales of our successes and side steps, necessarily filtered through thick lenses of humor and sincerity.

Thank you for your consideration.

If you receive the grant, how will the funds support your project?

As both of us are interested in alternative display methods, these funds would allow us to experiment with gallery furniture. At the moment I have been thinking of stripped versions of personal studies, library shelving, and writing desks in hopes of creating a split sense of desperate reverence, futile preservation, and quiet after the storm.

This funding would also help to service my new (old) stone cutting equipment. Though it was very generously donated, the machinery is in need of some care and our back porch requires just a little renovating in order to house the tools and connect the stone cutting saw to a water line.

Remaining funds would provide travel assistance to and from the gallery for delivery and installation of the exhibition.
Project Timeline:

October 2016 – March 2017 (opening reception March 8, 2017)

Project Description:

This project is a collaboration of two American Professors of Jewelry and Metals curating an exhibition of American contemporary art jewelry to take place at the Super + CENTERCOURT Gallery in Munich, Germany during the annual International Exposition of Trades and Crafts (Handwerksmesse) and the internationally renowned exhibition, Munich Jewelry Week / Schmuck 2017.

The exhibition titled Duality of Presence explores a movement in American contemporary jewelry and object making where artists aim to reveal hidden narratives through material, format, presentation, and interaction. The works reveal and question histories, lineage, conveyance, and supply chain to expand and contract possible contexts of meaning. In virtual reality a ‘duality of presence’ refers to the user’s ability to be present in both their own reality and another, via technology. This duality of presence highlights a specific approach in American making where artists explore both visible and veiled contexts through material, connecting the objects we make to a multiplicity of perspectives generated by these connections. This exhibition suggests and demonstrates that material specificity conjures both the reality in front of us, and others – at a distance. To be simultaneously viewing the artwork in the gallery, but also be transported by the materials story provides insight to our relationships with objects, materials, and histories through materiality, research, and making.

Seventeen prominent contemporary art jewelers have been invited to participate in Duality of Presence alongside the two curators and organizers. The works shown will demonstrate a broad range of subject matter, with material specificity, history, and lineage as the common threads that bind the works together. In addition to the physical display of jewelry and objects, the exhibition will include two digitally based interactive components, an innovative use of virtual reality video and an interactive website. Virtual reality headsets integrated into the gallery display will show VR videos produced by selected participating artists using a virtual reality multi-lens camera. Using their smart phone, the viewer will simply navigate to the exhibition website www.dualityofpresence.com, select an artist produced video; slip their phone into the Google Cardboard headset, and watch. The videos will transport the viewer from the gallery to a significant site or moment chosen and filmed by the artists. This exciting use of VR technology highlights the aim of the exhibition by didactically illustrating the proposition that material connects us to hidden histories.

If you receive the grant, how will the funds support your project?

If awarded the Crafthaus micro grant, the funds will support the purchase of materials for the execution of our display system, costs of hosting our interactive website, and the costs of producing a print catalog. The display will be made from lightweight Plexiglas and steel, with works secured to the clear panels – appearing to float in space. The curators will build a model of the display prior to arriving in Munich, and the final display will be built on site at CENTERCOURT Gallery for the exhibition. The exhibition includes an interactive website (www.dualityofpresence.com) and print catalog giving it global visibility - far beyond the primary viewers of the exhibition.

Project Timeline: JUNE 2016- SPRING 2017

Project Description:

STAMPED is an art educational organization founded in Pittsburgh, PA. Through the power of art, STAMPED’s goal is to provide free educational tools on social issues such as gender, race, politics, health and societal challenges. STAMPED’s passionate team of artists collaborates on projects to bring awareness and change to matters in both Pittsburgh and America with film, performance, painting, drawing, sculpture, music, dance and more.

In Fall 2016, STAMPED will launch its first project Every Two Minutes, a short film on sexual assault in America. With the help of women’s shelters like the Blackburn Center and PAAR, STAMPED is able to use professional resources to provide educational statistics and data on sexual assault and rape culture.

Once the film is released to the public, STAMPED will work to integrate Every Two Minutes into Pittsburgh universities and high school health classes. This short film is also designed for social media to include younger generations in sexual assault conversation and to spread media awareness. To involve the community, STAMPED is hosting public coffee talks and art workshops in Pittsburgh starting this fall.

Join STAMPED to spread awareness through the arts and bring positive change. Anyone with the passion for art, education or social justice is welcome to embrace our organization. With support, STAMPED can continue to create projects and raise awareness for our communities.

What will the grant be used for ?

With financial support STAMPED can afford to survive and continue educational art projects for the Pittsburgh community. Our goal is for STAMPED's passionate members to raise awareness and create change through the fine arts. We would like to work closely with Pittsburgh universities and high schools to implement sexual assault teachings into the schools' health systems. With the Crafthaus Project Grant we can work with teachers to recognize a new health program, rent public spaces for awareness events, host art workshops and open up educational talks. If STAMPED is awarded with funds, our staff will also be able to purchase the materials and supplies needed for their art, and to afford any studio space or gallery application fees. Please show your support and help bring change with one vote at a time!

As of 2015, Over 160 females have been killed in the Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) campaigns. That's 160 moms, daughters, sisters, and wives who will never come home to their families, and I could have been one of them. Thanks to the thorough training of my soldiers and the grace of God, I survived. As a 10 year veteran who has come as far as I have in my recovery, these jarring statistics inspired me to create something to declare solidarity with these women; to declare to the world that all of the women who fought in OIF/OEF campaigns were brave and courageous, and that their sacrifices were not in vain.

To commemorate their lives, I want to create a collection of ten special pieces of fine jewelry that represents ten different women who were lost. I am in the process of contacting the families of these women, asking them to tell me all about their fallen military member in order to create a piece that she would have a special intimacy with and would truly enjoy wearing. I am creating these pieces as of right now so that I have a collection of jewelry to propose an exhibition to the Witte Museum in time for Veteran's Day, 2017.

These materials include fine metals and gemstones, as well as boxes to present the jewelry in. It would also allow us to have the collection professionally photographed.

Project Timeline:
The project is beginning in mid-November 2016. My participation may end in November 2017, but the intention is for the project to continue on post my involvement.

Project Description:
Poverty is never an acceptable reason for a child to be in an orphanage.

This project will entail setting up a studio/workshop space, fitting it out with tools and equipment, then seeking to contribute skills and techniques to members of families in the family preservation program run by The Small Things (TST), an international NGO based in Tanzania. The vast majority of orphaned and vulnerable children have loving relatives who would be happy to give them a home, they just need a little bit of help. TST helps these families create sustainable livelihoods through business training, mentoring, ongoing follow up, school support, and loan or grant support, as well as covering school fees for the children.

The purpose with be to develop craft skills, building on Tanzania’s rich artistic tradition, that will result in income producing jewellery and wearable objects so children may return to their families. I have the skills, the passion, and the enthusiasm to do my part in working against poverty by not only volunteering, but by selling most of my possessions, I am able to supply tools, equipment and materials for the first year of development. The goal is to have a fully functional studio workshop that will continue after my return to Australia (if I ever).

I encountered Rebecca Ross Russell (founder of The Small Things) on the web through a mutual passion regarding Gendered Jewelry. Bekka had recently published her book: Gender and Jewelry: A Feminist Analysis, 2010, (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform), and I was developing a body of work titled, "What Would My Mates Say If I Wore A Brooch". As we got to know each other, I learned more about her work in Tanzania. Bekka began her time in Tanzania teaching a jewellery course at a vocational school, and ended up founding The Small Things, working with orphaned and vulnerable children and their families.

As I learned more about TST, I felt a strong desire to participate, so I took up the monthly sponsorship of Isaak Ismail, a young boy whose mother had died during the birth of his newest sibling in February 2014. Having completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts, Honours in 2015, with a major in jewellery and small objects and art history/theory, I looked for where I could put into practice what I had achieved. “Tools For Tanzania” is the next stage in my ongoing participation in this extraordinary organisation, TST, Nkoaranga.

My whole life has been a process of trying to belong, to fit in, it has not always been successful. As I became more acquainted with the ethos behind TST and saw their results, I knew the organization and the community they work with had something important to teach me. I would like to think that what I learn there, I will be able to bring back to Australia, enriching my community. Your support for this proposal, and help spreading the word about our efforts, would mean so much and have an enormous impact for this community.

If you receive the grant, how will the funds support your project?

The funds will be used to add to the initial donation of tools and metal by me.
