Strictly Platonic

Strictly Platonic is a necklace strung with The Five Platonic Solids (the only three dimensional shapes with the same number of regular faces meeting at each point). The cord is a nylon rope used in sailing. The beads are constructed with green fabric scraps from the flag-making industry, sewn together by hand using a technique based on the tradition English Paper Piecing method of patchwork quilting.
I am intrigued by the discreet codes and signals we use everyday. This jewel is made to be worn as a flag, a marker of place, a signal. It satisfies a desire to categorise and create order out of chaos, allowing the wearer to connect with others who understand the secret code of Art Jewellery. The piece is an exploration of the complex nature of relationships; we seek to find connection but more often than not misread the signs. A personal add in the Strictly Platonic section of Craigslist becomes loaded with sexual desire. Put on the necklace and GO.
