You are right, I do like new materials and try to express feelings with my work.
Congratulations to your girlfriend on the Talente prize!
:)
I have a variety of design processes depending on the piece - but I always start with a paper and soft pencil sketch - trying always for the expressive and gestural.
From there, depending on the piece I sometimes:
1. make physical conceptual models
2. make simple 3d models using sketchup
3. draw a full scale technical drawing
4. begin making a full scale model
We make all of the work in my studio, using fairly traditional woodworking tools, machinery and processes, including a lot of laminating and steam bending. Joinery is nearly always some variant of mortise and tenon. We nearly always finish with an oil finish.
I'm in the subtropical part of Australia- so quite wet - but our wet season has finished now - so we now just have small amount of rain until November-December. If you do get to Australia you would be most welcome to visit.
regards
Ross
