Building on the legacy of Elsie and Louis Freund who started the first art school in Eureka Springs in the 1940s, The Eureka Springs School of Art was founded by committed, widely respected artists and patrons within the community that felt they both had an obligation and an opportunity to provide art education. ESSA brings together people of mixed backgrounds, ages, and nationalities to make with their hands and their minds in a supporting and encouraging environment. It is our belief that art is vital to the human spirit and we are committed to cultivating promoting and encouraging artistic expression by providing art education opportunities in the unique environment of the Ozark mountains. ESSA offers three, five and extended six week concentrations in leather, iron, clay, wood, textiles, painting & drawing and small metal and are currently in open enrollment. ESSA’s scholarship program is funded by the generous donations of patrons just like you every year. Approximately 10 scholarships per year are awarded for various workshops, also awarded are three special scholarships each year in memory of Patt Carmichael, Jack Miller and Carol White.

Applicants are notified approximately 3 weeks after the application deadline.

Individual scholarships provide full coverage of workshop tuition. They are awarded to a student based on financial need, merit, quality of work and other various criteria. You can find the application forms for all scholarships at http://essa-art.org/scholarships/

  • The Patt Carmichael Scholarship awarded in Painting.
  • The Jack Miller Scholarship awarded to a student in Printmaking.
  • The Carol White Scholarship awarded to an artist in their chosen medium.

Applicants must submit: Complete Application form, three good quality images of  current work, a letter of intent (1 page maximum) and two letters of reference.
