Manchester Craft and Design Centre
Launch Event / 30 January / 6pm – 8pm

Bringing together questions about craft, how our minds work and the ways in which artists and scientists view neurodiversity, our forthcoming exhibition by Dr Kai Syng Tan showcases a large-scale tapestry which was digitally hand-drawn and then woven by machine in the same place that Grayson Perry used for his work. This intricate and fascinating tapestry is the result of an artistic residency at the Social Genetic and Developmental Research Centre, in which Dr Kai Syng Tan explored how scientists and artists view neurodiversity, ADHD and a common feature of ADHD, mind-wandering. Mind-wandering means letting your thoughts wander away from the here and now. In psychiatry, excessive mind wandering is viewed as something that might need treatment but mind-wandering has long been celebrated as part of the creative process in many different art forms.

We’re really pleased for this thought-provoking piece to be coming to us in the New Year so that we can continue to explore these topical issues and also look at how the piece also raises questions about craft production in the digital age.ed in both the scientific and cultural fields in relation to ADHD, neurodiversity and arts and mental health.

We look forward to welcoming you along to the launch event on the 30 of January, where we’ll be joined by the artist for an informal celebration of the exhibition and launching a programme of associated events.

Old stories, new narratives: sustainability, identity and collaboration
Symposium 1-3 July 2020, Lyth Arts Centre, Caithness
AAS are delighted to be hosting a one day Symposium on 2 July 2020 that seeks to celebrate the di-versity of craft practice and the positive value of sharing knowledge and collaboration. The Symposium is flanked by the private view of the Meet, Make, Collaborate international craft exhibition on 1 July at Thurso Art Gallery and skills sharing workshops on the 3 July with Scottish and international makers. All activity investigates themes of sustainability, identity and collaboration and draws on a range of recent international collaborations.

The Symposium will provide an opportunity to share new ideas about your practice, your research-in-progress or to present a case study concerning the future of making practices and process and what these might have to offer in a global context.

We ask for contributors to respond to: how do contemporary makers create a sense of identity in a globally connected world? Is craft an antidote for some of the issues regarding sustainability? What impact does the current focus on climate change have in terms of material and production choices, business models, social, community enterprise and ethical consumption? How can cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary collaboration inform long-standing values associated with contemporary craft practice and innovation?

Please email a 200-word abstract (for a 20-minute paper), along with a short biography to juliette.macdonald@ed.ac.uk by 2 March 2020. Further information here

Voluntary Arts

Join us for Networking and Information Events to discuss plans for Get Creative Festival, Creativity & Wellbeing Week and Age of Creativity in May 2020!

This is an opportunity to:

• hear about the Creative Festivals taking place in May 2020

• start planning your involvement in the festivals

• network with others in your area and plan joint activities.

Join the waitlist if your preferred event is already full as spaces may open up. Find your nearest meeting at bit.ly/CreativeJan

With creativity and wellbeing now high on the agenda in policy across culture, health, ageing, social connectedness and communities, the time has never been better to come together to discuss how we can work together to support opportunities for everyone, regardless of who they are or where they are, to participate in culture and creativity. Across the three festivals, we will be focused on reaching out to more people, working towards positive futures and looking at mental health in young people, climate change, ageing through the life course, and public health and everyday creativity; but we welcome events and activities that relate to any health, wellbeing or wellness issue or creativity more broadly - these are open and inclusive festivals and we want to showcase whatever you are doing!

COCKPIT ARTS: London Craft Week 27 April – 3 May

We’ll be contributing to London Craft Week‘s exciting programme of events once again – this time in collaboration with Thinking City. In a series of talks and discussions under the banner of Craft + Communi-ty, we’ll focus on the pertinent subjects of Bridging Divides, Forging Neighbourhoods and Building Better Cities.
In detail, we’ll explore:
• how craft and creative practice can help bring communities together and bridge social/economic di-vides; also how accessibility to arts practice as well as a market for crafts can be improved for communities.
• how craft can play a role in defining places – looking both at historical and contemporary examples – and the relevance of that neighbourhood identity for people living and working there.
• And discuss how craft can be used to improve public spaces and community facilities, looking at specific examples and hearing from practitioners.
More information and ticket details to be announced shortly on www.cockpitarts.com
