Our Next Contemporary Craft & Design Fair

We hope you managed to visit our Henley event which moved to a new location and was held in June this year.  If you missed it, we are staging a major craft event at RHS Garden Hyde Hall over the August Bank Holiday weekend (26-29 August).  Here, you will be able to see and purchase from one of the largest events over the Bank Holiday, showcasing the finest designer makers in the UK.

2016 Halstead Design Challenge

Make it Shake, Rattle & Spin! This call-for-action was made to 100 lucky recipients of the 2016 Halstead Design Challenge kits. Each kit contained 50 components. Artists were asked to create a kinetic brooch using the supplies and adding a found object. Selected brooches were featured in an exhibition at Blue Spiral 1 gallery during the Society of North American Goldsmith's SNAGneXt conference in May 2016 and now also in this online exhibition. This is a fun exhibit - all artists share videos of their brooches in action so we can see how they move. Some brooches are still available for purchase, a portion of proceeds is used to raise funds for SNAG. Don't miss this.

Psst: We are currently working on the next Halstead Design Challenge kit. Resulting work will be shown at the 2017 SNAG conference in New Orleans - more on entry details to follow soon!

Director, Zoe Laughlin, has been beavering away during her summer holiday and produced a podcast series all about stuff and things. We think you might like it.

Called The Things That Make Us, it is about people and the objects that have shaped them. Each week, a guest is invited to pick 5 things that have inspired, delighted, provoked or influenced them. Zoe and her guest then talk about these items ‘on tape’ at a time and place of the guest’s choosing - ideally with as many of the things present as possible.

To celebrate the launch of this new series, two episodes have been released at once, featuring writer and broadcaster Jay Rayner (who performs the theme tune to the show!) and renowned artist Cornelia Parker. In the coming weeks, guests will include star of Red Dwarf and Scrap Heap Challenge, Robert Llewyllen, CBeebies presenter Dr Ranj, and the esteemed developmental psychologist Professor Dame Uta Frith.

Hothouse 6: Meet the best new makers

This exhibition demonstrates the value and importance of innovative handmade craft and is part of our programme that introduces the most exciting new makers to collectors.

The work is selected from the prestigious Crafts Council's Hothouse programme that offers a vital stepping stone for craft artists wishing to break into the sector. As a result, these makers will soon be snapped up by prestigious retail outlets and manufacturers and soon to be occupying the shelves of the likes of Liberty London or Harrods. This is an opportunity to invest in the future of British crafts when they are still fresh and affordable.

The exhibition presents highly collectable work by Ranti Bamgbala, Sally Burnett, Toby Cotterill, Arjan van Dal, Victoria Claire Dawes, Bola Lyon, Tina MacLeod, Rhian Malin, Kira Meyer, Melissa Montague and Hannah Tounsend. The New Ashgate Gallery is a Hothouse partner: Hothouse 6 is the Crafts Council initiative where selected makers take part in the six-month programme which is delivered in partnership across four regions in the UK. It consists of ten one-day workshops, a two-day residential, six hours of 1:1 mentoring and connects the maker to a national network of makers and organisations. It provides the maker with the tools to grow a sustainable and successful business when they need these skills most - at the start of their career.
