I am interested in the dialogue created when recognisable forms from the history of European fashion and the decorative arts are combined, changed, and reinterpreted in a modern material.
For this project I chose to focus on material research and development, exploring plaster as a primary material in jewellery. Plaster has long been used in architectural decoration, but the plaster I use has been chemically changed with modern products to create an altered material that is waterproof and suited for use in jewellery production. I explored surface enhancement and advanced construction techniques to further develop the jewellery. I developed my construction methods based on historical plasterwork, adapting these techniques to fit my personal design agenda.
The images and forms I use come directly from my photos and drawings, based on objects seen on my visits to museums and stately homes. My interest in the forms, patterns, and images from the rich history of European design inspires this collection of contemporary jewellery.

I saw some very good work and some not so good..overall though it was quite inspiring to meet fellow artists/friends and their new work and also make some new ones. I was there only from Thur till Sat so I didn't manage to see all of the galleries as I was planning to do. I'll know for next year! What about you? What did you think?
Yes I did, Babettos exhibition was very good as well!
How do you find the work in the UK? Do you come down to London at all? Have you visited any of the galleries here? What do you think?
Hi Miriam,
I just joined your group 'Work and Life in England - An American view' and thought you might be interested in my discussion that asks the question 'Can you BE American and FEEL Canadian (or any other culture or Country?)' http://crafthaus.ning.com/group/canadacancraft/forum/topics/are-you...
I think you're group is a wonderful study of culture and education. I hope you are enjoying your studies in Birmingham. I just returned to Canada from my year abroad in Birmingham. :)
Ah yes! Rob Jackson is a bit of an hero for me. It was an article he wrote which turned my head away from the European minimalism I'd been attempting and onto to the path I now tread. You are so lucky to have worked with him in Italy (northern Italy being just about my favourite part of Europe).
Haha! The holidays differ wildly. When I was young, I used to hate it because the anglo-centric television programmers would start showing Tarzan series when the English schools were on holiday and then I never saw the end because we went back to school first!
Thanks for telling me. I am currently working very hard on entries from outside of the US, it's good to know it is working. I AM getting good entries from the UK specifically :-))
Miriam, I have already spotted your call for entries and am now trying to decide whether or not to create something wholly new or whether to pull together existing photographs!
I'd love to do something new but a commission came my way about which I am not allowed to speak and that will be taking my time for the foreseeable future.
Hi Miriam - How should I submit for the show? I don't want to jam up your inbox with the movie. I'd love to be in your show, just let me know how you'd like me to proceed. Thanks for your interest!
