Tinglit of the Beaver tribe: Traditional First Nation Craft, Alaska
Last week I was visiting Tlingit natives of the Beaver tribe who work at Saxman village just outside of Ketchikan, Alaska. Ketchikan counts itself as the rainiest city in the U.S. and there's a reason for that. But it didn't matter, I enjoyed being there anyway.
The natives (as they prefer to be called) told us about their culture, tribal house, totem pole showed off their carving skills (this image,) and performed 4 dances to a drum beat. All quite impressive. The natives did not have a written language in their history, so the totems tell stories relevant to the tribe's folklore and history.
