PORTRAITS OF THE ARTIST AS...

In these miniature stoneware self portraits, I have imagined myself as whim touches my fancy, with inspiration from history, art, style – even a snippet of text.

Each hand built bust begins with coils, I wait for the inspiration of character, detail the features and expression by making comic faces into a mirror, then add appropriate attributes. At leather stage the piece is sectioned so that the inner walls can be thinned
to one-quarter inch thickness. A secret is inscribed in each before it is put back together
with slip, and the work is high fired. Only major details are glazed, such as Queen Elizabeth’s jewels, The Great Wave’s fish and Marie Antoinette’s hair ornaments.

My approach to sculpture begins with an observation of the figure, with an exploration
of the gorgeous nuance that clay offers—the opportunity to play with light and shadow,
detail and drama. With a background in fashion illustration, it is by instinct that I search for the line
that graces form, hair and fabric …and a vaudeville gene that needs to entertain.
