This is a remake of a very old piece, dating from the mid-1990s when I was kind of finding my feet stylistically. It is still a favourite piece - one I've never sold - and it marks the beginning of my interest in jewellery inspired by the late middle-ages (though not at this point the jewelllery of the period) and on a large scale.

The piece was re-made in the late 1990s when I got a lathe and could turn a well-shaped spike in brass, allowing it to be cast in gold. The previous mace had fabricated conical spikes and was less satisfactory. The main ball on this one was made by running molten carving wax around the inside of a table-tennis ball!

The chain is about 1200mm long, and the ball about 40mm across, each spike sticking out 8mm from that.
