Jay Macdonell is a classically trained glassblower—he served a traditional four-year apprenticeship with noted teacher and artist Robert Held. In great demand as a lecturer, teacher and demonstrator, Macdonell has worked for many Pacific Northwest studios and artists as a gaffer, design consultant and project manager. His expressive work comes from the belief that glass is a material of gesture. He notes that his work “is an exploration and distillation of the botanical and there is no other material that allows you to create such fluid, graceful forms while expressing the luminous pallet that nature has to offer”. Macdonell’s Allium Bulb Series is based upon bulbs found in the spring—unplanted, their potential withered, squandered on a winter of survival. He hints at the degradation of the bulb and the potential of its interior beauty while capturing its inherent movement and energy. Macdonell has taught at various schools including Canada’s Espace Verre, Bay Area Glass Institute and Pilchuck Glass School. He has been artist in residence at the Museum Of Glass in Tacoma, The Bay Area Glass Institute and ACAD. His work is in many public and private collections and has shown locally with morgan for several years both in Pittsburgh and Glassweekend, Millville, NJ.
