The bascinet was a Medieval European open-faced helmet, typically fitted with a maille aventail to protect the throat and neck and a hinged visor. Two styles of attaching the visor existed. The "klappvisor" utilized a single hinge at the front of the forehead that was commonly seen in Germany. This helmet was made of 12 and 14 ga. mild steel. It features two different styles of visor. The solid visor is made to be more historical while the barred visor is more practical for the needs of SCA heavy combat rules.
