They are being required to get a PhD in Australia and some of Europe. Even long time faculty like Robert are. The impression I got was that in order to serve on PhD committees, they have to have one. So it is self propagating. For example, why should Jamie Bennett have to get a PhD at this point in his career? Do you want to get one?
I had spirited conversation with Robert Baines about the studio PhD. He made some good points and it does seem to be the way Europe and Australia are going. I remain unconvinced. While I think the research is valuable, it could take place without that structure. I hate to see young artists have to stay in school five more years before they can try to find a job. Seems nuts to me. Judy's field is dealing with the same thing, because few can make a living writing. That said, those PhD candidates get paid to be in school because they teach. We don't have the classes they have in English. If they had teaching jobs at all, they would kill all adjunct positions. Seems misguided to me.
Those gold dots in the middle don't help. I was hoping for more of the effect that David Hyuck had in his Kissing Bowls. His work is so amazing. As you said on the escalator, maniacal.
