Karyl Sisson - Sewing Notions

For many years Iʼve been collecting things like sewing notions (buttons & zippers), womenʼs vanity items (bobby pins, hair pins & curlers) and paper drinking straws. I like the idea and practice of recycling and am drawn to undervalued and overlooked materials.

RIP: The House of Falling Furniture

Defenestration" was an original, local landmark in San Francisco, CA between 1997 and 2013. The house/sculpture/public artwork was created to attract locals and visitors alike and only intended to be exhibited for one year. However, as things often go, the public installation became so popular that it turned into a more permanent installation remaining open for about 16 years

Charles Matton - Living in a Box

Matton was famous for his perspective-warping reconstructions of artists' studios - among them those of Freud, Giacometti, and Bacon. At a scale of about 1/7th of their original size, the replicas are much bigger than the average dolls house or architectural model, and give the viewer an eerie sense of being overgrown - present inside the room, but not quite.

Flora Bhattachary, London, UK - Carving and 3D

My work is all inspired by my family’s links with India, it has a European aesthetic but with contemporary Indian undertones. A lot of people have commented on an Art Deco influence which comes through in my work. I use 18 carat gold and gold vermeil combined with deeply colored stones. My work is quite rich in color and opulent in style - but with a dark theme running though it.

Atelier XJC - Material Exploration

To celebrate its tenth anniversary, the high-end Swiss jeweler Atelier XJC decided to mix things up a bit and publish a lush magazine chock full of its latest experiments—explorations of materials that they typically don't work with. The experiment seems to have gone well.

Dundee, Brighton and Best of Britannia 2015

Posted by The Justified Sinner

So, as per my summer norms, I am in Brighton again for the summer season, reminding me of the quote from "Prick Up Your Ears", 'When you say he's on the Coast, dear, do you mean he's in Brighton?'...
I arrived on Friday immediately after seeing my graduates officially graduate at the Dundee University graduation ceremony in Caird Hall. Here are Inness and Anne getting additional honours from Desperate Dan: The actual ceremony was very good, with excellent speakers, which makes a change for these sorts of events.

Second Skins - Tamara Barrage, Beirut, Lebanon

Tamara Barrage is a product designer based in Beirut, Lebanon. She graduated from the Design Academy in Eindhoven (The Netherlands) with a Masters in Contextual Design.

Tamara is interested in the way objects provoke our senses through their skins, forms and functionality and she is looking for ways to define a design process by manipulating, exploring, and experimenting with a wide range of materials and textures.

Lisa Hammond: 'A Sense of Adventure' feature film about British potter

This documentary follows top UK studio potter Lisa Hammond as she prepared for her 2012 Goldmark exhibition. Delving into her artistic practice, it provides an insight in to the various stages that go into making her distinctive pieces. We see Lisa at her wheel throwing chawans (teabowls) and a large tsubo jar; firing and unpacking her kiln; and talking about her influences over the years, in particular her love of the Japanese pot making tradition. Also captured on camera is her technique of spraying the soda solution direct into the firebox over a period of three hours, creating the characteristically rich and varied surfaces of her pots.

Yours truly will be in Albuquerque, NM for the rest of the week attending the ISGB (International Society of Glass Bead Makers) Annual Gathering as their keynote speaker. I will take lots of pictures and report back when I return!
