NACH Bijoux - Toulouse, France

I am always interested in what goes on across the pond as far as craft in all its forms is concerned. What I like about this Toulose, France-based firm is their eye-popping photography. While the jewelry is definitely a bit on the unusual side for the mainstream buyer, pairing it with high fashion gestures and makeup makes sense and I have a feeling that it makes the pieces appealing to a younger market segment as well. Personally, I don't think the work is so outrageously new or innovative. What sets it apart is the way it is photographed and set in scene.

Gaetano Pesce - Italian Designer

During his long career that spans four decades with commissions in architecture, urban planning, interior, exhibition and industrial design, Gaetano Pesce has worked on numerous public and private projects in the United States, Europe, Latin America and Asia. Here are a few images of his pieces.

Catwalk - University of East London - Autumn/Winter 2015/16

I came across images of the UEL school's recent undergrad fashion show and thought I'd share them on crafthaus to give you all a peek outside of the US. There are many fashion schools in London and the work that their students produce is decidedly different from anything else going on in other parts of the world.

Willy Verginer - Human Nature

Willy Verginer works with wood as his primary sculpting material. Carving away at solid pieces of linden wood from the northern region of Italy (South Tyrole), he creates beautifully rendered, figurative sculptures. The life-sized works are then finished with acrylic paint and at times with the addition of other materials to create different textures.

Yuanman Li - Rococo Electroformed

"Sumptuous, feminine and highly ornate are words that could be used to describe this collection and the decorative style of Rococo interior, which has been my source of inspiration."

Call for Artists: LEAP Award 2016

The LEAP Award was established in 2007 in honor of SCC Director of Exhibitions Kate Lydon’s 20-years of service.  The program recognizes exceptional emerging talent in the contemporary craft field and provides opportunities for these early career artists to bring their artwork to the consumer market.

The yearlong retail program features, markets and sells the work of one winner, who also receives a $1000 prize, and 6 finalists.  Brigitte Martin, who is the creator and Editor-in-Chief  of crafthaus, will be the guest juror for LEAP 2016.

Handmade By Machines 2015

Posted by The Justified Sinner

A year has passed since the 2014 Handmade By Machines show at The Lighthouse in Glasgow and this year bigger and better than ever. A show about digital manufacture for the jewellery industry, focusing on the work done by the tutors and students at the four Scottish colleges offering jewellery courses and, for the first time, work by staff and students at London's private jewellery school, Holt's Academy.

The standard of the work was higher than ever, which is encouraging, indicating that the people who are completing their courses and entering the industry are better-positioned than ever to deal with the massive changes which are sweeping through the jewellery industry specifically and the product-design world generally.

The range of technologies on show is as one would expect, laser-cutting, SLS in a variety of materials including metal, SLA which has then been set, cast, formed and used directly as product... There were so many entrants in the show and curator, Karen-Ann Dicken, has taken the admirable approach of mixing up the work of the different colleges and further mixing the work of tutors in with that of students.

Our bodies are our most primary tools...let's start to bring education and awareness to students, professionals and hobbyists alike. I feel passionate about the need to start and continue this conversation and view it as part of our ongoing professional practices.
